Closest is the Clearwater Marine Aquarium, 249 Windward Passage, 1.6 miles from Pier 60 (10 a.m. to 5 p.m., $41.95 adults as of October 2026). Within 15 to 35 minutes: downtown Dunedin, or Countryside Mall's movies, ice rink and trampoline park. For an all-day rain, drive 40 to 55 minutes to the Dalí Museum in St. Petersburg ($32, open to 8 p.m. Thursdays) or the Florida Aquarium in Tampa. In summer, check the radar loop before you drive anywhere.
Key takeaways
- The National Weather Service puts the rainy season for west-central Florida at May 25 to October 10. In those months a wet afternoon is normal, not a ruined trip.
- The Clearwater Marine Aquarium is the only big indoor attraction within 10 minutes of the sand. It's part indoor, part outdoor, and the outdoor sea lion and seal habitat may close in bad weather.
- Winter the dolphin died on November 11, 2021. Hope and Nicholas are among the dolphins living there now.
- For a long rainy day, downtown St. Petersburg has the best cluster: the Dalí, the Imagine Museum, the Museum of Fine Arts and a children's museum, 40 to 55 minutes away.
- The cheapest tickets are the Dunedin History Museum ($5 adults) and the Imagine Museum's $5 rate after 5 p.m. on Thursdays.
- Thunder means leave the beach. The NWS says get in your car, skip the open-sided shelters, and wait 30 minutes after the last rumble before going back.
Will it rain all day, or should I wait it out?
Sort this out before you get in the car. Much of Clearwater Beach's rain comes as summer thunderstorms, and a drive to a museum can take longer than the storm does. Our summer storm clock shows which hours thunder most often hits from June to September.
The NWS Tampa Bay office puts the rainy season for west-central Florida at May 25 to October 10. It begins when showers and thunderstorms start building almost every day over the peninsula, with late-night and morning storms out over the eastern Gulf. The office splits the season into three phases. Late May through June is when severe storms are most likely: hail, damaging wind, waterspouts. July through early September brings the heaviest rain, though the severe-weather threat eases; lightning stays a hazard. Mid-September through early October winds things down, with patchier rain from tropical systems and the first cold fronts. Storm timing shifts day to day with the position of the Bermuda High, so don't count on an "it always rains at 3 p.m." rule. Big mosquito hatches tend to follow wet spells, so read up on mosquito hatches after heavy rain before an evening on the sand.
Outside those months, beach rain is more often a front or a tropical system moving through. Those can last all day, and that's when an indoor plan pays off. Our Clearwater Beach weather by month guide shows how rainfall changes through the year.
Open the NWS Tampa Bay radar (station KTBW) and play the loop. A few separate cells with clear sky behind them usually means you can wait under a roof and still get a beach afternoon. A wide band of rain stretching far back along its track means go indoors. Then check the hourly forecast graph on weather.gov for Clearwater Beach to see how long the high rain chances hold. The live cams in our Clearwater Beach webcams guide show what the sand looks like right now.
NWS lightning guidance for beachgoers: go to your car, don't shelter under open-sided beach picnic shelters (the Pier 60 Park pavilions are that kind), and wait 30 minutes after the last rumble of thunder before going back out. A fully enclosed building, like a hotel lobby or a restaurant with walls, also works.
How far is each indoor option from Pier 60?
Distances are road miles from Pier 60, routed on OpenStreetMap data. Drive times are estimates, padded for causeway and bridge traffic, which builds when the whole beach leaves at once. Prices and hours come from each venue's own site, as of October 2026.

What's indoors within 10 minutes of the beach?
Really just one: the Clearwater Marine Aquarium on Island Estates, off the Memorial Causeway a short hop from the beach. It's a working marine rescue center. Many of the animals on show are residents whose conditions mean they live there full time, and patients come through for rehab. You'll see bottlenose dolphins (Hope and Nicholas among them), sea turtles, otters, harbor seals and the manatee rehabilitation center. CMA says it's the only facility in North America where you can also see rescued rough-toothed dolphins. The parking garage connects directly to the third-level entrance, so you won't get soaked between car and door.
Older rainy-day lists get two things wrong. Winter the dolphin, star of Dolphin Tale, died on November 11, 2021. CMA keeps a memorial to her and her prosthetic tails are still on display, but you won't meet her. And CMA calls itself "both an indoor and outdoor experience." Pinniped Pier, home to its California sea lions and harbor seals, is outside on level two through the Harborview Deck, and the aquarium says it may close in bad weather. In a heavy storm, plan on the indoor exhibits.
Admission as of October 2026 is $41.95 for ages 12 and up, $39.95 for seniors 65 and over, $32.95 for kids 3 to 11, and free for 2 and under. Garage parking costs extra; CMA lists it only as "seasonal rates." It's closed Thanksgiving and Christmas. Our Clearwater Marine Aquarium guide covers how long to plan for and what to see first.
The other close-by move is a long lunch somewhere with real walls. Our Clearwater Beach beach bars guide notes which spots have indoor seating and which are open-air.
What's 15 to 35 minutes away?
Downtown Dunedin is the easy half-day. The Dunedin History Museum, 349 Main St, is small and cheap: $5 for adults, $4 for seniors, teens and college students, free under 12. It opens at 11 a.m. Monday through Saturday and noon on Sunday. Treat it as a short stop, not an afternoon. A few blocks away, Dunedin Brewery, 937 Douglas Ave, bills itself as "Florida's Oldest Craft Brewery" and dates to 1996. It opens at 11 a.m. daily and has a kitchen. Downtown has plenty of other places to eat, and our best restaurants in Dunedin guide picks the good ones.
Countryside Mall, 27001 US Highway 19 N, is the family fallback because everything sits under one roof. There's CMX Cinemas Countryside 12 (reserved recliners and D-Box motion seats; 727-683-0011), an ice rink on the first level between Dillard's and Macy's, run by Tampa Bay Skating Academy (call 727-723-7785 for public skate times), the recently opened Launch Family Entertainment trampoline park on the second level, and a food court. The mall posts each day's hours on its site; on Sunday, October 4, 2026, it listed 11 a.m. to 7 p.m.
Is the Dalí or the Florida Aquarium worth the drive in the rain?
If the forecast says rain all day, yes. Of the two cities, downtown St. Petersburg is the better bet: four indoor museums close together, and no bay to cross.
The Dalí Museum, One Dali Blvd, is the anchor. Gallery admission is $32 for adults, $29 for seniors 65 and over, $22 for teens and college students, $12 for ages 6 to 12, and free for 5 and under. Shows in the immersive Dalí Dome are $15 extra. Hours are 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. daily, to 8 p.m. on Thursdays, and it's closed Thanksgiving and Christmas. On-site parking is $10, cards only, first come, first served. Buy tickets online before you leave the hotel; they're released up to 30 days ahead, and on-site sales are "as space allows." The Avant-garden is outdoors, so save it for a dry spell.
Pair it with the Imagine Museum, 1901 Central Ave, which shows contemporary glass art: $15 adults, $13 seniors, $10 ages 7 to 17, free for 6 and under. There's a free lot behind the building and no timed ticket. The other option is the Museum of Fine Arts, 255 Beach Dr NE: $16 adults, $14 seniors, $10 ages 7 to 17, closed Mondays. If you're weighing a whole day there, our Clearwater vs St. Petersburg comparison lays out the city.
The Florida Aquarium, 701 Channelside Dr in Tampa, is the big traditional aquarium, and the longer drive, across Old Tampa Bay. Tickets use date-based "Plan-Ahead Pricing," so look up the price for your date. Most of the year it's open 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. (to 6 p.m. in June and July), and closed Thanksgiving and Christmas. Valet at the main entrance is $20 for up to three hours and $40 for longer, but there's no valet when a cruise ship is docked at Terminal 2; use the nearby garages those days. Pick it if your kids want big tanks and a full day. Pick CMA if you'd rather see rescue work and skip the hour in the car.
What are the best rainy-day picks for kids?
- Under 6: Great Explorations Children's Museum, 1925 4th St N in St. Petersburg. It's aimed at young kids, has a free lot, and costs $15 a child and $12 an adult (under 12 months free). It closes at 4 p.m., so go in the morning.
- Ages 3 to 10: the Clearwater Marine Aquarium. If attention runs out, you're 10 minutes from the hotel, not an hour.
- A bigger Tampa day: Glazer Children's Museum, 110 W Gasparilla Plaza ($27.95, Florida residents $22.95, under 1 free), which pairs with the Florida Aquarium downtown. In the school year it's closed most Mondays.
- Tweens and teens: Countryside Mall, with a movie, the ice rink and Launch off one parking lot.
More ideas for families, rain or shine, are in our Clearwater Beach with kids guide, and our tips for babies and toddlers cover the youngest travelers.
What should adults do on a rainy day?
- A brewery afternoon in Dunedin. Dunedin Brewery opens at 11 a.m., and downtown is walkable, so you can stay as long as the rain does. Line up a designated driver for the ride back.
- An art night in St. Pete. On Thursdays the Dalí stays open to 8 p.m. and drops gallery admission to $16 after 5 p.m., and the Imagine Museum charges $5 after 5. The Museum of Fine Arts runs Art After Dark from 5 to 8 p.m. on select Thursdays (check its calendar).
- A matinee. CMX Countryside's recliners are a good place to sit out a front that won't clear until evening. For a night out instead, our guide to an indoor show at Ruth Eckerd Hall covers parking, dinner nearby and the ride back.
- A game on TV. Our guide to sports bars showing the game lists which beach bars say they carry NFL, college and NHL games.
If it clears by evening, head back for sunset. Our things to do at night guide picks it up from there.
Which indoor options cost the least?

Frequently asked questions
What is there to do in Clearwater when it rains?
The closest pick is the Clearwater Marine Aquarium, 1.6 miles from Pier 60. Within about half an hour are downtown Dunedin (history museum, Dunedin Brewery, restaurants) and Countryside Mall (CMX movie theater, ice rink, Launch Family Entertainment). For a full rainy day, drive 40 to 55 minutes to St. Petersburg for the Dalí, the Imagine Museum and the Museum of Fine Arts.
Does it rain all day in Clearwater Beach in summer?
Usually not. The NWS describes the May 25 to October 10 rainy season as near-daily showers and thunderstorms whose timing shifts day to day. Check the radar loop: scattered cells usually pass, while a broad band of rain means it's time for an indoor plan.
Is Winter the dolphin still at the Clearwater Marine Aquarium?
No. Winter died on November 11, 2021. The aquarium still cares for dolphins, including Hope and Nicholas, along with sea turtles, otters, harbor seals and manatee patients.
Is the Clearwater Marine Aquarium good on a rainy day?
Mostly. It's the closest indoor attraction, and the garage connects to the entrance. But CMA is part outdoor, and its outdoor Pinniped Pier may close in bad weather, so a stormy visit means mostly indoor exhibits.
How long should I wait after thunder to go back on the beach?
The NWS says to wait 30 minutes after the last rumble of thunder. Shelter in a car or a building, not under open-sided picnic shelters or pavilions.
Is the Dalí Museum open late?
On Thursdays. The Dalí is open 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. daily and until 8 p.m. on Thursdays, and it's closed on Thanksgiving and Christmas.
