No, not if you're staying on the island. The Jolley Trolley's two beach routes run every 30 to 45 minutes from about 9:30 a.m. to 10 p.m. (near midnight Friday and Saturday) for $2.25 a ride, capped at $5 a day when you tap. PSTA's Grouper shuttle meets PIE flights for $8 a rider, and the Clearwater Ferry ($6 to $9) sails Thursday to Sunday. Rent a car only for Honeymoon Island, Fort De Soto or Tampa.
Key takeaways
- The walkable core is small. The Clearwater Beach Marina is a few minutes' walk from Pier 60, and the Clearwater Marine Aquarium and the Island Estates Publix are each roughly a mile away on foot.
- Trolley fare is $2.25 a ride ($1.10 for seniors 65+ with ID, free for kids 8 and under). Cash riders need exact change and pay every time. Tap a contactless card or use the Flamingo Fares app and PSTA caps you at $5 a day.
- The Jolley Trolley no longer sells day passes on board. The Flamingo Fares app replaces them.
- Guests at Sandpearl, Opal Sands, Sheraton Sand Key, the Marriott on Sand Key and Tradewinds ride the Jolley Trolley free with a room key, and can bring up to four guests.
- The Clearwater Ferry costs $6 to downtown Clearwater or $9 to Dunedin, one way, after a $1 increase on September 17, 2026.
- No public bus runs from Tampa International (TPA) to the beach, so take a rideshare or taxi. From PIE, book the Grouper.
Do you need a car in Clearwater Beach?
For most beach-based trips, no. Clearwater Beach is a narrow barrier island, and most of what visitors come for sits in a strip about a mile long: Pier 60, the Beach Walk promenade, the marina where the dolphin and sunset boats leave, and the restaurants and bars on Mandalay Avenue. You can walk most of that. Two trolley routes cover the rest from mid-morning to late evening.
A car earns its keep when your plans lean on places transit serves badly: the state park beaches north and south of the island, Tampa attractions, Orlando. It also makes sense for a family of five hauling beach gear, or for anyone staying on the mainland and driving to the sand every day. If that's your trip, our guide to getting to Clearwater Beach covers drive routes, and the Clearwater Beach parking guide covers where to leave the car.
Everyone else can skip the rental. Between your own feet, the Jolley Trolley, PSTA's Suncoast Beach Trolley and the odd Uber or Lyft, you're covered. Street-legal golf carts and mopeds are another option, with limits on where they can go.
What are the car-free options, and what do they cost?
Every option in one table. Fares and times come from the operators' own pages and timetables as of October 2026. These are scheduled times, and every operator warns that traffic and weather can push them back.
| Option | Where it goes | When it runs | One-way fare |
|---|---|---|---|
| Walking | Pier 60, Beach Walk, marina, Mandalay Avenue | Any time | Free |
| Jolley Trolley, North Beach route | Marina, Transit Center, Mandalay Ave to the north end, Island Estates (Publix) | About every 45 min, roughly 9:40 a.m. to 10:10 p.m.; until about midnight Fri and Sat | $2.25 ($1.10 reduced, 8 and under free) |
| Jolley Trolley, South Beach route | Downtown Clearwater (Park St), ferry dock, Transit Center, Pier 60, Beach Walk, Sand Key to Bay Park | Every 30 min, roughly 9:25 a.m. to 10 p.m.; until about midnight Fri and Sat | $2.25 |
| Jolley Trolley, Coastal route | Downtown Clearwater, Dunedin, Palm Harbor, Tarpon Springs Sponge Docks | Hourly; last northbound trip leaves the Transit Center 7:35 p.m. Sun to Thu, 10:35 p.m. Fri and Sat | $2.25 |
| Suncoast Beach Trolley (PSTA Route 701) | Clearwater Beach, Sand Key, Indian Rocks Beach, Madeira Beach, John's Pass, St. Pete Beach | Daily every 30 min, about 5:40 a.m. to 10:10 p.m. southbound from the beach; later trips Fri and Sat | $2.25 |
| Clearwater Ferry, Red Line | Clearwater Beach Marina to downtown Clearwater | Thu to Sun, hourly, about 10 a.m. to 8:30 p.m. | $6 ($3 reduced, 8 and under free) |

| Grouper Airport Express (PSTA) | St. Pete-Clearwater International (PIE) to any Clearwater Beach address, including the Sand Key resorts | Whenever PIE has flights; book on demand or up to 2 months ahead | $8 per rider; $20 for 3 to 4; $30 for 5 to 8 |
| Uber, Lyft, taxi | Anywhere | Any time | Check the app; surge pricing applies |
Two fare changes are pending. In late August 2026 the PSTA board voted to charge $2.36 to riders who tap a credit or debit card (cash and Flamingo Fares stay at $2.25) and to raise the Grouper single fare to $10. In early October 2026, PSTA's fare and Grouper pages still showed $2.25 and $8, so you may see either number.
Jolley Trolley drivers carry no change, and cash only buys a single ride. Pay cash and you'll hand over $2.25 every time you board. Use the Flamingo Fares app or card, or tap a contactless credit or debit card (not American Express), Apple Pay or Google Pay, and PSTA stops charging once you hit $5 in a day. You have to tap with the same card or phone each time.
How does the Jolley Trolley work on the beach?
The Jolley Trolley runs public routes in partnership with PSTA, the county transit agency. Its office is at 1230 S. Myrtle Ave., Suite 301, Clearwater (727-445-1200). For visitors it comes down to two beach loops, which meet at the Clearwater Beach Transit Center near the Causeway Boulevard roundabout and at the Clearwater Beach Marina, plus the Coastal route to Dunedin and Tarpon Springs.
North Beach route
This loop covers the north half of the island and Island Estates. It starts at the Publix in the Island Village Shopping Center on Island Way (the Island Estates Publix), runs to the Transit Center, then heads north on Mandalay Avenue with stops at Ron Jon, Papaya Street, the Baymont and the library. It loops around Bay Esplanade to 880 Mandalay, then comes back down Mandalay past Acacia, Rockaway, Clearsky and the Hilton to the Beach Walk, the marina and 700 Island Way. A full loop takes about half an hour. Trips leave Publix about every 45 minutes starting at 9:41 a.m. The last loop starts at 9:36 p.m. Sunday to Thursday and at 11:21 p.m. Friday and Saturday.
The Clearwater Marine Aquarium is a request-only drop-off. To get back, the timetable tells you to walk to Windward Passage and Island Way (by the Mobil station) and go by the Publix stop times.
South Beach route
This is the workhorse. It starts at the Park Street Terminal in downtown Clearwater, stops at the downtown ferry dock, crosses the causeway to the Transit Center, then runs down S. Gulfview Boulevard past Pier 60, the Beach Walk and Shephard's. From there it crosses the Sand Key bridge and follows Gulf Boulevard past the Sheraton Sand Key to Bay Park on Sand Key. The Transit Center to Bay Park leg takes about 15 minutes. Heading north, it stops at the Shoppes on Sand Key, the Marriott, Surf Style, Crabby's on the Beach Walk, the Hyatt (301 S. Gulfview Blvd.) and the marina.
| South Beach route | Sun to Thu | Fri and Sat |
|---|---|---|
| First southbound from Park St (downtown) | 9:23 a.m. | 9:23 a.m. |
| Frequency | Every 30 minutes | Every 30 minutes |
| Last southbound from Park St | 9:15 p.m. | 11:15 p.m. |
| Last northbound from Bay Park | 9:48 p.m. (marina 10 p.m.) | 11:48 p.m. (marina midnight) |
| Last North-to-South transfer at the Transit Center | 9 p.m. | 10:30 p.m. |
Times come from the Jolley Trolley timetables posted as of October 2026. Before a late-night ride, check the live tracker on the Jolley Trolley site.
Which hotels ride free?
The Jolley Trolley lists five hotels whose guests ride free with a room key, along with up to four guests each: Sandpearl (Mandalay Avenue, north beach), Opal Sands (S. Gulfview Boulevard, south beach), the Sheraton Sand Key and the Marriott on Sand Key (both on Gulf Boulevard), and Tradewinds on St. Pete Beach. The list comes from the operator, but hotel perks change, so confirm at check-in.
Bikes ride on front-mounted racks that hold two standard bikes, and you load and secure your own. Service animals are allowed, pets aren't. If you're picking a hotel with car-free days in mind, our where to stay in Clearwater Beach guide breaks the island down by area. Anywhere from the north end of Mandalay Avenue down to Bay Park is on a trolley line.
Can you get to Dunedin and Tarpon Springs without a car?
Yes, on the Jolley Trolley's Coastal route. It leaves the Clearwater Beach Transit Center every hour at 35 past, crosses to the Park Street Terminal downtown, then follows Alt. 19 north through Dunedin, Palm Harbor and Tarpon Springs to the Sponge Docks. The timetable puts downtown Dunedin (the Main Street stop) about 30 minutes from the Transit Center and the Sponge Docks about 75 minutes.
| Coastal route | Sun to Thu | Fri and Sat |
|---|---|---|
| First northbound from the beach Transit Center | 9:35 a.m. | 9:35 a.m. |
| Last northbound from the Transit Center | 7:35 p.m. | 10:35 p.m. |
| Last southbound from the Sponge Docks | 8:06 p.m. | 11:06 p.m. |
| Ozona stop | Weekends only, Friday evening through Sunday evening | |
For Tarpon Springs, go early. It's 75 minutes each way, and on weeknights the last trolley back leaves the Sponge Docks at 8:06 p.m. Our Tarpon Springs day trip guide covers what to do once you get there. Dunedin is a better evening out on Friday or Saturday, when the trolley runs later.
How do you get to Sand Key, Indian Rocks and St. Pete Beach by trolley?
PSTA's Suncoast Beach Trolley (Route 701) covers the Pinellas beaches end to end. It starts at the Park Street Terminal in downtown Clearwater, crosses to Clearwater Beach, then runs south on Gulf Boulevard through Sand Key, Indian Rocks Beach, Indian Shores, the Redingtons, Madeira Beach, John's Pass Village and Treasure Island to 75th Avenue on St. Pete Beach. It runs every 30 minutes, seven days a week, on a timetable effective February 1, 2026.
- From Clearwater Beach: the first southbound trip leaves the Transit Center (south side) at 5:41 a.m. The last regular trip leaves at 10:10 p.m., and Friday and Saturday add trips at 10:40 and 11:10 p.m.
- Ride times: about 45 minutes to John's Pass and a little over an hour to 75th Avenue on St. Pete Beach.
- Coming back: the last regular northbound trip leaves 75th Avenue at 9:42 p.m. (11:12 p.m. Friday and Saturday) and gets to the Clearwater Beach Transit Center about an hour later.
- Gaps: it doesn't serve Belleair Beach or Belleair Shores, and only some early-morning trips stop at Island Estates.
The fare is PSTA's standard $2.25, with the same $5 daily cap if you tap. At 75th Avenue you can switch to PSTA's SunRunner rapid bus toward downtown St. Petersburg. The SunRunner doesn't take cash, so have a card, phone or the app ready. Going from Clearwater Beach to downtown St. Pete this way is slow: you spend an hour on the trolley before you even board the SunRunner. That's fine for a lazy day, but not if you have a dinner reservation.
Is the Clearwater Ferry running, and what does it cost?
PSTA's Clearwater Ferry links three docks: the Clearwater Beach Marina near Pier 60, downtown Clearwater, and the Dunedin Marina in downtown Dunedin. As of early October 2026, the operator lists service Thursday through Sunday.
| Line | Route and schedule | Fare (as of Oct 2026) |
|---|---|---|
| Red Line | Downtown Clearwater to the Beach Marina hourly on the hour, 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. Beach Marina back to downtown hourly at half past, 10:30 a.m. to 7:30 p.m. | $6 adult; $3 reduced; 8 and under free |
| Blue Line | Every 2 hours. Downtown departures 10:30 a.m. to 6:30 p.m. Beach Marina departures 11 a.m., 1, 3 and 5 p.m. Dunedin departures 10 a.m., noon, 2, 4 and 6 p.m. | $9 adult; $4.50 reduced; 8 and under free |
The operator's printed schedule still shows the old $5 and $8 fares. Prices went up $1 on Thursday, September 17, 2026, and PSTA's ferry page now lists $6 and $9. That $1 matches the fuel surcharge the PSTA board approved in August: it applies while diesel is above $4 a gallon and comes off when prices drop below that. Reduced fares cover seniors 65 and up, riders with disabilities, Medicare card holders, youth 9 to 18 and adult students, all with ID.
The season is less clear. PSTA's ferry page still describes a February-through-Labor Day season, but the operator's site says it's currently running Thursday to Sunday, and the boats sailed last fall too: Dunedin service came back on October 9, 2025, after Hurricanes Helene and Milton damaged the Dunedin landing. Expect fall service, but check the booking calendar on the Clearwater Ferry site for your dates, and know that bad weather cancels sailings.
Book online if you can. Walk-ons only board if there's room, while an online ticket holds your seat. The operator suggests arriving about 10 minutes before departure. Bikes aren't allowed on board (a Coast Guard rule), and there are no restrooms. Leashed, well-behaved pets are fine. After the storms the ferry moved to temporary docks, and the operator says it's still improving ADA access there, so call 727-643-1832 ahead if that matters for your group.
The ferry and the trolley work well together. The South Beach trolley stops at the downtown ferry dock, so you can take the boat one way and the trolley back.
What about Uber, Lyft and taxis?
Uber and Lyft both work in Clearwater Beach, and they cover the gaps: early airport runs, late nights after the trolleys stop, and places transit doesn't reach. We don't list dollar quotes because rideshare prices change minute to minute. Check the app for your actual trip and time, and expect surge pricing on spring break weekends, holidays and big Pier 60 events.
For a sense of scale, here are approximate road distances from Pier 60 and drive times in light traffic, from OpenStreetMap-based routing:
| From Pier 60 to | Road distance | Drive time, light traffic | Transit alternative |
|---|---|---|---|
| Clearwater Marine Aquarium | about 1 mi | a few minutes | Walk (roughly 20 min) or North Beach trolley |
| Downtown Clearwater (Park St) | 2 to 3 mi | 5 to 10 min | South Beach trolley or Red Line ferry |
| Downtown Dunedin | about 6 mi | about 15 min | Coastal trolley or Blue Line ferry |
| St. Pete-Clearwater Airport (PIE) | about 12 mi | about 25 min | Grouper shuttle |
| Tampa International Airport (TPA) | about 20 mi | 35 to 40 min | None direct |
| Downtown St. Petersburg | about 23 mi | about 40 min | Suncoast trolley + SunRunner (slow) |
Rush hour and beach-season backups on the Memorial Causeway can stretch those times a lot.
How do you get from the airport to Clearwater Beach without a car?
From PIE (St. Pete-Clearwater International): book PSTA's Grouper Airport Express. It's a shared, on-demand shuttle between PIE and any address on Clearwater Beach, including the Sheraton and Marriott resorts on Sand Key. Pickup is outside the west baggage-claim exit doors. You book at grouper.psta.net or in the Grouper app, either on demand or up to two months ahead, and you get a 15- to 30-minute pickup window. You'll need a phone that gets texts for ride updates. It runs whenever PIE has arriving or departing flights.
As of October 2026, PSTA lists the fare at $8 for one rider and $4 for seniors 65 and up, or $20 total for 3 to 4 riders and $30 for 5 to 8. The board has approved raising the single fare to $10, so the app may show that instead. There's no cancellation fee. The van may stop for other riders on the way, and some trips use a taxi instead of a branded Grouper vehicle. The Grouper only connects PIE and the beach. It won't take you around the island.
From TPA (Tampa International): no public bus runs straight to the beach. PSTA's Route 300 express does stop at the TPA rental car facility, but it runs weekdays only, between the Ulmerton Road park-and-ride in Largo and downtown Tampa, and never comes to Clearwater. For the roughly 20-mile trip, a rideshare or taxi is the realistic option. If you haven't booked flights yet, our TPA vs PIE comparison looks at which airport makes a car-free trip easier. For car-free trips, PIE plus the Grouper is hard to beat.
Is a rental car cheaper for a week? The math
Your rental rate and rideshare fares depend on dates and timing, so we can't quote them. We can price the car-free side with published fares and show what a car has to beat.
Example: two adults spend seven nights on the beach and fly into PIE. They take the trolley on five days, the ferry to Dunedin on one, and a rideshare for one longer outing.
| Car-free week, 2 adults | How it's figured | Cost (Oct 2026 fares) |
|---|---|---|
| Grouper, PIE to beach and back | 2 riders x $8 x 2 trips | $32 ($40 if the $10 fare is in effect) |
| Trolley on 5 days | $5 daily cap x 2 people x 5 days (most days cost less) | up to $50 |
| Ferry day to Dunedin | Blue Line $9 x 2 people x 2 trips | $36 |
| One longer outing (Honeymoon Island, Tampa) | Your in-app rideshare quote, round trip | varies |
| Total | about $118 to $126, plus one rideshare round trip |
| Rental car week | What to add up |
|---|---|
| Rental | Your quote x 7 days, plus taxes, airport fees and any rental-car toll fees |
| Overnight parking | Your hotel's nightly parking fee x 7 (see our hotel parking and resort fees guide) |
| Daytime parking on the island | City lots are $3.50 an hour (6 a.m. to 11 p.m.), so 4 hours is $14 (or park free downtown on weekends and ride the trolley in) |
| Fuel | Your mileage |
For a couple, the car-free week costs about $120 plus one rideshare. At $18 a night, a week of hotel parking alone costs $126, and that's before a dollar of rental. For couples and solo travelers staying on the beach, car-free nearly always wins.
Families change the math. Kids 8 and under ride the trolley and ferry free, and the Grouper charges $20 total for 3 to 4 riders, so a family of four still does fine without a car. A family planning three or four off-island days (theme parks, state parks, Tampa) will usually save with a car, or with a short rental for just those days.
Which trips really need a car?
Transit falls short for these outings. For each one, compare a rideshare round trip with a one-day rental.
- Honeymoon Island and Caladesi Island. The park is roughly 11 to 12 road miles from Pier 60. The Coastal trolley runs along Alt. 19 through Dunedin, but the park entrance is a few miles out the Dunedin Causeway from there. Our Honeymoon Island State Park guide has the details, and the Caladesi Island guide linked at the bottom of this page covers getting to Caladesi.
- Fort De Soto Park. About 36 road miles south, roughly an hour's drive in light traffic. The trolley gets you to St. Pete Beach, but no transit goes on from there to the park.
- Tampa attractions and Orlando. Busch Gardens is about 30 road miles away, and Orlando's theme parks are much farther. Plan on a car or a rideshare.
- Manatee and springs trips up the Nature Coast. Long drives and early starts.
Most people stay car-free on the beach and rent only for the day or two they need one. Our day trips from Clearwater Beach guide shows which outings are worth a rental day.
Can your trip work car-free? A quick checklist
Car-free works if:
- Your hotel or rental is on the island, between the north end of Mandalay Avenue and Bay Park on Sand Key.
- You're flying into PIE (Grouper) or don't mind a rideshare from TPA.
- Your plans are the beach, the pier, boats from the marina, the aquarium, dinners on Mandalay Avenue, and maybe Dunedin or Tarpon Springs.
- You're happy heading back by about 10 p.m. Sunday to Thursday, or paying for a rideshare after that.
- You can shop at the Island Estates Publix (a North Beach trolley stop) or carry a few bags.
Rent a car (at least for a day) if:
- You're staying on the mainland and plan to hit the beach most days.
- Two or more days involve state parks, Tampa or Orlando.
- Someone in your group can't handle stops, transfers and some walking in the heat.
- You often need early-morning or late-night rides. The beach trolleys don't start until around 9:30 a.m., which matters most when getting to the airport before dawn.
- Your hotel includes parking, which removes one of the biggest costs of having a car.
This page draws on the Jolley Trolley's posted routes and timetables; PSTA's fare, Suncoast Beach Trolley, Clearwater Ferry, Grouper and Route 300 pages; the Clearwater Ferry operator's schedule, booking page and FAQ; St. Pete-Clearwater International Airport; and the City of Clearwater's beach parking list, all checked in October 2026. Road distances come from OpenStreetMap-based routing, and walking distances are map estimates. We didn't ride, time or price any trips ourselves. Frequently asked questions
Do you need a car in Clearwater Beach?
Not if you're staying on the island. You can walk most of the beach area, and the Jolley Trolley's North Beach and South Beach routes run every 30 to 45 minutes from about 9:30 a.m. to around 10 p.m., later on Friday and Saturday. You only need a car, or a one-day rental, for places like Honeymoon Island, Fort De Soto, Tampa or Orlando.
How much is the Jolley Trolley?
$2.25 a ride as of October 2026, or $1.10 for seniors 65+, riders with disabilities and Pinellas County students with ID. Children 8 and under ride free. Cash needs exact change and has no daily cap. Tap a contactless card or phone, or use the Flamingo Fares app, and PSTA caps your fares at $5 a day.
Is the Jolley Trolley free for hotel guests?
At five hotels, yes. The operator lists Sandpearl, Opal Sands, Sheraton Sand Key, the Marriott on Sand Key and Tradewinds. Guests ride free with their room key and can bring up to four guests. Guests at other hotels pay the regular fare.
Does the Clearwater Ferry run year-round?
It sails Thursday to Sunday only. PSTA's page describes a February-through-Labor Day season, but as of early October 2026 the operator lists Thursday-to-Sunday service, and the Dunedin route restarted in October 2025. Check the operator's booking calendar for your dates.
Is there a bus from Tampa airport to Clearwater Beach?
Not a direct one. PSTA's Route 300 express stops at TPA's rental car facility, but it runs only on weekdays, between Largo and downtown Tampa, and doesn't serve Clearwater. From TPA, take a rideshare or taxi, or fly into PIE and use the Grouper shuttle.
Can you get from Clearwater Beach to St. Pete Beach by trolley?
Yes. PSTA's Suncoast Beach Trolley (Route 701) runs every 30 minutes, every day, from Clearwater Beach down Gulf Boulevard to 75th Avenue on St. Pete Beach. The ride takes a little over an hour and costs $2.25.
Can I bring a bike on the trolley or the ferry?
On the trolley, yes. Jolley Trolley vehicles have front racks for two standard bikes, and you load your own. On the ferry, no. Coast Guard rules keep bikes off the Clearwater Ferry boats.

Planning a car-free Clearwater Beach trip?
Start with where you'll sleep. A hotel on a trolley line does most of the work for you.
