The short answer

Yes, go. The Tarpon Springs Sponge Docks on Dodecanese Boulevard are 17.4 miles from Pier 60, about 40 to 55 minutes by car. Without a car, the Jolley Trolley Coastal route leaves the Clearwater Beach Transit Center hourly at :35 and takes about 75 minutes for $2.25. Budget $21 for the St. Nicholas Boat Line sponge-diving cruise, lunch at Hellas or Dimitri's, and four to six hours door to door (prices as of October 2026).

Key takeaways

  • Driving: 17.4 miles from Pier 60 to the Sponge Docks, mapped at 37 minutes on empty roads. Plan on 40 to 55 minutes.
  • Trolley: the Jolley Trolley Coastal route runs hourly, $2.25 a ride (kids 8 and under free). The last trip back from the Sponge Docks leaves at 8:06 p.m. Sunday to Thursday and 11:06 p.m. Friday and Saturday.
  • The St. Nicholas Boat Line cruise is $21 for adults, $9 for ages 6 to 15, walk-up only, 10:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. daily. The live diver appears on select tours, so call ahead if that's why you're going.
  • Walking the docks is free. The Sponge Exchange courtyard of shops is open 10:30 a.m. to 6 p.m. daily.
  • The Heritage Museum (Greek history wing) is open weekdays only, 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., $5 for adults. Dimitri's on the Water is closed Wednesdays.
  • There's no beach at the docks. If you want sand too, Fred Howard Park is about 3 miles away ($6 parking).

Is Tarpon Springs worth the trip from Clearwater Beach?

For most visitors, yes. Nothing else within an hour of the beach looks or eats like it. Greek sponge divers began arriving in the early 1900s, and by 1905, the Sponge Exchange says, more than 500 were working from 50 boats. Their descendants still run many of the bakeries and sponge shops along the river, and Visit St. Pete/Clearwater, the county's tourism office, says the town has the largest Greek community per capita in the United States.

It is not a beach day, and it won't fill a whole day on its own. The docks are a few blocks of shops and restaurants along the Anclote River, and three hours covers the core. Think of it as a long lunch with a boat ride attached.

  • Food people: Go. Greek pastries and grilled octopus by the river are the reason to make the drive.
  • Families with kids 6 and up: Go. The sponge-diving boat is short, cheap and easy to follow. Add the Tarpon Springs Aquarium if the kids want more animals.
  • Car-free travelers: Go, but leave early. The trolley takes about 75 minutes each way, so a 9:35 or 10:35 a.m. start makes the day comfortable.
  • Beach-only travelers: Skip it, or pair it with Fred Howard Park or Honeymoon Island State Park so the day still ends on sand.
  • Visitors on a two-day trip: Probably skip it. Spend that time on the beach and the boats in Clearwater. Our Clearwater Beach itinerary shows where a side trip fits in a longer stay.

How do you get from Clearwater Beach to Tarpon Springs?

You can drive, take the trolley or call a rideshare. The mapped drive crosses the Memorial Causeway and then follows Alt. 19 north for about 14 miles through Dunedin and Palm Harbor. The trolley uses the same road and stops in each town.

Drive distance and the free-flow time come from the OpenStreetMap-based OSRM router, run from Pier 60 to Dodecanese Boulevard on October 4, 2026. The 40-to-55-minute range is our estimate, padded for causeway traffic and the lights on Alt. 19. Weekend afternoons run longer.

The Jolley Trolley Coastal route

The Clearwater Jolley Trolley runs this route as a PSTA public service. It starts at the Clearwater Beach Transit Center, stops at the Clearwater Beach Marina four minutes later, crosses to the Park Street terminal downtown, then heads up Alt. 19 through Dunedin, Palm Harbor and downtown Tarpon Springs (the Tarpon Avenue stop) to the Sponge Docks. In September 2026 Tarpon Springs renewed its share of the route's funding for three years, backdated to October 2025, so the route is funded through 2028.

Fares are $2.25 a ride, $1.10 reduced, and free for kids 8 and under. Bring exact change, because drivers carry none, and cash pays for one ride at a time. You can also tap a contactless card or phone, or use PSTA's Flamingo Fares app; PSTA advertises a $5 daily cap for riders who pay that way. A plain round trip is $4.50, so the cap only comes into play if you break the trip in Dunedin. The full rundown on beach trolleys is in our guide to Clearwater Beach without a car.

The timetable is a guide, not a promise

The operator's own timetable says times "may vary due to traffic conditions, weather or unforeseen events," and Alt. 19 gets slow on weekends. Service is hourly, so be at the Sponge Docks stop a few minutes early for the ride back, and don't count on the last trip of the night if you have somewhere to be.

Parking at the Sponge Docks

We couldn't find a city-published parking rate for Dodecanese Boulevard, so we don't print one. Read the signs where you park and have a card or phone ready to pay. These nearby rates are published (as of October 2026):

  • Heritage Museum, 100 Beekman Lane (Craig Park): Tarpon Arts lists free street parking and a lot behind the building for museum visitors. It's about a mile south of the docks by road.
  • Sunset Beach (city park): Since the city's 2026 ordinance, non-residents pay $5 a day through the ParkMobile app.
  • Fred Howard Park, 1700 Sunset Drive (Pinellas County): $6 a day at pay-by-plate stations.

What is there to do at the Sponge Docks?

Start by walking Dodecanese Boulevard end to end: sponge boats tie up on the river side, and shops, bakeries and restaurants line the other. After that, pick from the list below.

  • The Sponge Exchange. Sponge buyers set it up in the early 1900s so divers could store their catch while waiting for the auctions. It's now a courtyard of more than 30 shops and restaurants, open 10:30 a.m. to 6 p.m. daily. It sits across the street from the St. Nicholas Boat Line ticket booth.
  • Natural sponges. The one souvenir that makes sense here. A bacterial blight wiped out the sponge beds from the late 1930s to the mid-1940s, but they recovered, and St. Nicholas Boat Line says Tarpon Springs is still the largest natural sponge-producing community in the world.
  • Tarpon Springs Heritage Museum (100 Beekman Lane, in Craig Park). Small but good, with a Greek community wing covering foodways, religion and celebrations, plus sponge-industry documentaries. Open Monday to Friday, 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Adults pay $5. It's about a mile from the docks, so drive or take the trolley to the Tarpon Avenue stop.
  • St. Nicholas Greek Orthodox Cathedral (36 N. Pinellas Ave.). The current building was completed in 1943, with marble that the Greek government gave the parish from Mount Penteli near Athens. Visitors are welcome during open prayer hours and services. Check the cathedral's website for times, and remember it's a working church.
  • Tarpon Springs Aquarium and Animal Sanctuary (1722 N. Pinellas Ave.). Sharks, alligators, stingrays and a touch tank, about 1.3 miles from the docks by road. Open daily 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. except Thanksgiving and Christmas. Day passes are $34.99 for adults 13 and up, $24.99 for ages 3 to 12 and $29.99 for 65 and up, with 15% off online.
Pick your weekday

Go on a Monday, Tuesday, Thursday or Friday if you can. The Heritage Museum is closed on weekends and Dimitri's on the Water is closed on Wednesdays. Friday is the best trolley day, since the last ride back leaves at 11:06 p.m.

Which sponge-diving boat tour should you take?

The one to take is the St. Nicholas Boat Line at 693 Dodecanese Blvd. (727-942-6425). The family-owned line has run since 1924, and two of its boats, the St. Nicholas III and VII, are on the National Register of Historic Places. The captain narrates sponge-diving history on the Anclote River. On select trips a diver suits up in more than 170 pounds of traditional gear, walks the river bottom and comes back with a live sponge.

Seniors 65+ and military$20
Students 6-15$9
Under 6Free, one per paying adult or senior
LengthA 45-60 minute cruise or a longer 60-90 minute tour
Hours10:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. daily; call to confirm
BookingWalk-up only, from the ticket booth on the dock across from the Sponge Exchange. Departures run on demand, with no fixed schedule

The operator says the diving demonstration happens "on select tours" and asks visitors to call ahead about diver availability. If the diver is why you're going, phone that morning. The line also describes itself as pet-friendly.

Other narrated sightseeing and dolphin cruises also leave from the docks, including Spongeorama Cruise Lines. These boats land on Anclote Key; for nearby Three Rooker Island you need a private boat. We couldn't confirm their schedules or prices from published sources, so ask at the booths. If dolphins are the goal, the dolphin tours from the Clearwater Beach Marina are closer to your hotel.

Where should you eat Greek food at the Sponge Docks?

All three post their address and hours on their own websites, and the hours below come from those listings as of October 2026. This isn't a food review; the "go for" column describes the kind of meal each place serves.

The Hellas bakery opens two hours before its dining room, so if the 9:35 a.m. trolley drops you at 10:49, a coffee and pastry there will carry you to a late lunch. Visit St. Pete/Clearwater also names Mykonos and Mama's Greek Cuisine among the Greek kitchens in town. Neither had current details on an official site we could reach, so call before planning around them. If you'd rather eat on the way home, our Dunedin restaurant picks sit right on the trolley line. During stone crab season (October 15 to May 1), Rusty Bellies and its fish market are a good place to pair claws with the trip.

Can you combine Tarpon Springs with Dunedin or Honeymoon Island?

Yes. Dunedin and Honeymoon Island are on the way back to the beach, and Fred Howard Park is just west of the docks.

  • Dunedin (by trolley or car): Downtown Dunedin is about 11 miles back toward Clearwater. The southbound trolley reaches the Dunedin stop on Main Street 44 minutes after leaving the docks (the 3:06 p.m. trip gets there at 3:50). Get off for an early dinner and a walk, then catch a later trolley. Sunday to Thursday, the last one through Dunedin is the 8:06 p.m. from the docks, due at about 8:50.
  • Honeymoon Island (car only): The park entrance at the end of the Dunedin Causeway is about 11 miles from the Sponge Docks, mapped at around 25 minutes without traffic. Do the docks in the morning and the beach in the afternoon. It's a state park with a per-car entry fee and closing time tied to sundown, so check current hours, fees and the Caladesi ferry situation on our Honeymoon Island guide.
  • Fred Howard Park (car only): Tarpon Springs' own beach, a Pinellas County park at 1700 Sunset Drive. A one-mile causeway leads out to a white-sand beach with a marked swimming area. It's open 7 a.m. to sunset, and parking is $6 a day. It's about 3 miles from the docks by road. See how it compares with the other beaches near Clearwater.

For trips farther afield, our day trips from Clearwater Beach guide compares the other options by drive time and cost.

When is Epiphany in Tarpon Springs?

Every January 6, and it's the town's best-known celebration. After the Divine Liturgy at St. Nicholas Cathedral, a procession of clergy and faithful walks to Spring Bayou. The archbishop casts a cross into the water, and young Orthodox Christian men aged 16 to 18 dive to retrieve it. The cathedral says the community has held the cross dive for close to a century. If your trip covers January 6, build a day around it, and expect much bigger crowds and a trolley that runs even further off its timetable. Our Clearwater-area events calendar lists what else is on around the same dates.

How we researched this

Compiled from the Jolley Trolley Coastal route timetable and PSTA fare pages, the City of Tarpon Springs, Tarpon Arts, Pinellas County, St. Nicholas Greek Orthodox Cathedral and each operator's and restaurant's own website, all listed below. Prices, hours and schedules were checked against those published sources on October 4, 2026. Drive distances come from OSRM routing on OpenStreetMap data. We didn't visit, call or ride for this page, and we don't print rideshare quotes we can't stand behind. We're an independent guide and aren't paid by any business named here.
