The short answer

Florida stone crab season runs October 15 to May 1. Your best bet near the beach is Frenchy's: the Stone Crab Weekend block party outside Frenchy's Original Cafe (41 Baymont St) on October 23 and 24, 2026, then claws all season at Frenchy's Outpost and Frenchy's Stone Crab & Seafood Market on the Dunedin Causeway. For take-home claws, Ward's Seafood (1001 Belleair Rd, Clearwater) is closest. Frenchy's posts $27.95 to $50.95 a pound by size (as of October 2026).

Key takeaways

  • FWC's season is open October 15 through May 1 and closed from May 2. Only claws are kept, and each must be at least 2 7/8 inches.
  • Frenchy's Stone Crab Weekend 2026 is Friday and Saturday, October 23 and 24, noon to 10 p.m. Admission is free at both sites: 41 Baymont St on Clearwater Beach and 501 Causeway Blvd in Dunedin.
  • Claws are priced by size. Frenchy's online shop lists Medium at $27.95/lb, Large $35.95, Jumbo $46.95 and Colossal $50.95 (posted October 4, 2026, before opening day, with every size sold out).
  • Claws are cooked as soon as they come off the boat, so you buy them ready to eat. Have them cold with mustard sauce, or warm them in boiling water for a minute or less.
  • To trap your own you need a Florida saltwater fishing license (unless exempt) and, if you're 16 or older, a free trap registration. The limit is 5 traps and 1 gallon of claws per person.

When is stone crab season in Florida?

The Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission (FWC) sets one season for state waters: open October 15 through May 1, closed starting May 2. Commercial crabbers and recreational trappers work the same dates. Traps can be baited and dropped 10 days early, but nobody may pull them before opening day. So the first fresh claws hit seafood counters on or just after October 15, and opening-week supply depends on how those first pulls go.

Some older pages and at least one local seafood counter still say the season ends May 15. FWC's rule is May 1. Out of season, any claws on a menu or in a case were frozen last season. Frenchy's, for one, ships "re-freshed" claws in summer: flash-frozen at peak freshness and thawed when they ship.

The season covers the cooler half of the year, which makes it an easy add-on to a fall visit to Clearwater Beach or a winter stay.

What is Frenchy's Stone Crab Weekend?

Frenchy's started Stone Crab Weekend in 1984, when owner Michael "Frenchy" Preston began selling the season's first claws to the public at just above cost. It has grown into a two-day block party, and for 2026 it runs in two places at once.

The beach party sits on Baymont Street, just off Mandalay Avenue. If you're staying on the beach, walk over instead of circling for a space. Drivers get pointed to nearby public lots and metered street parking; our Clearwater Beach parking guide lists the garages and lots.

Go early on Friday

Frenchy's admits it relies on "the goodness of Mother Nature" for the harvest and that availability will vary. Claws are the scarce item on a party weekend, so show up close to the noon start on Friday. If the beach runs short, the Dunedin market is your backup.

Where can you eat stone crab near Clearwater Beach?

No restaurant knows its supply until the traps come up, so few menus print stone crab ahead of time. The places below say on their own websites or menus that they serve it. Call before you drive, especially in the first weeks of the season.

RestaurantAddressWhat the restaurant saysBest for
Frenchy's Outpost Bar & Grill 466 Causeway Blvd, Dunedin; 727-625-3619 Frenchy's says stone crab is served here during and after Stone Crab Weekend, though availability varies. Open Sun-Thu 11 a.m.-9 p.m., Fri-Sat 11 a.m.-10 p.m. A sit-down claw dinner with Frenchy's own catch
Frenchy's Stone Crab & Seafood Market (steamer bar) 501 Causeway Blvd, Dunedin; 727-250-4126 Seafood market with a steamer bar for eating on site; sells claws caught by Frenchy's own fishermen in season. Casual claws without a restaurant wait
Rusty Bellies Waterfront Grill 937 Dodecanese Blvd, Tarpon Springs; 727-934-4047 Menu says "our stone crabs are caught fresh in local waters," and the owning family runs its own stone crab boat, the Miss Wyolene. Closed Mondays. Pairing claws with a Tarpon Springs day trip
Island Way Grill 20 Island Way, Clearwater (Island Estates); 727-461-6617 Homepage advertises seafood "from stone crab to oysters," but stone crab isn't on the printed dinner menu posted online. Ask when you reserve. The closest upscale option to the beach, if it's on that night

Restaurants almost always charge market price for claws, and it moves during the season. Ask the price that night and which size you're getting. The Dunedin Causeway spots are about 9 miles from the Clearwater Beach roundabout, roughly 20 to 30 minutes by car depending on traffic (a map estimate, not a timed drive), so it's easy to pair them with a day at Honeymoon Island. Tarpon Springs is about 17 miles, or 35 to 50 minutes. Our Tarpon Springs day trip guide covers the sponge docks around Rusty Bellies.

For grouper, oysters and fish houses on the island itself, see our best seafood restaurants on Clearwater Beach. Our Frenchy's location guide sorts out how the five Frenchy's restaurants differ.

Where can you buy stone crab claws to take home?

If your rental has a kitchen, a market is the cheapest way to eat a lot of claws. All three below are seafood businesses with their own counters, not a supermarket fish case.

MarketAddress and phoneHours (as of October 2026)Stone crab notes
Ward's Seafood 1001 Belleair Rd, Clearwater; 727-581-2640 Market Mon-Sat 10 a.m.-7 p.m., Sun 10 a.m.-5 p.m. Family-owned since 1955. Lists locally caught claws in five grades: Floaters, Medium, Large, Jumbo and Super Jumbo. No prices posted online; call.
Frenchy's Stone Crab & Seafood Market 501 Causeway Blvd, Dunedin; 727-250-4126 Mon-Fri 10 a.m.-7 p.m., Sat 9 a.m.-7 p.m., Sun 10 a.m.-6 p.m. Claws from Frenchy's own fishermen in Medium, Large, Jumbo and Colossal. Its online shop also sells the house stone crab mustard ($3.99 for 8 oz) and ships claws FedEx Priority Overnight.
Pelican Point Seafood 933 Dodecanese Blvd, Tarpon Springs; 727-934-3134 Mon-Sat 9:30 a.m.-6 p.m., Sun 10 a.m.-6 p.m. Lists stone crab claws as seasonal (Oct 15-May 1) and asks you to call for prices and availability. Ships in the continental US; call to order.

Ward's is the easy run from the beach: about 4 miles, roughly 10 to 20 minutes by car over the Memorial Causeway and through downtown Clearwater (map estimate). Its kitchen does take-out Monday to Saturday, 10 a.m. to 6:30 p.m. The site doesn't explain its "floaters" grade, so ask at the counter what you're getting before you buy. For other fish markets and restaurants that cook your catch, see our guide.

How much do stone crab claws cost, by size?

Stone crab sells by the pound, and the bigger the claw, the higher the price. Nobody sets opening-week prices until the claws come in. For now, the most useful public numbers are the ones in Frenchy's online shop. Treat them as a snapshot, not a quote.

SizeClaws per pound (Frenchy's)Posted online price per lb (as of October 2026)Rough cost per claw
Medium5-8$27.95About $3.50-$5.50
Large3-5$35.95About $7-$12
JumboAbout 3$46.95About $16
Colossal1-2$50.95About $25-$51

These are the prices on frenchysstonecrab.com as of October 4, 2026, when every size showed out of stock ahead of the season. Online orders have a 3 lb minimum and ship FedEx Priority Overnight at extra cost, and the Dunedin counter price may not match. The per-claw column is our own arithmetic from the posted price and claw count; real claws vary in weight. Frenchy's FAQ gives slightly different counts (Medium 6-7, Large 4-5, Jumbo 3, Colossal 2), and sizes aren't standardized from one seller to the next.

How much to buy

Frenchy's "Dinner for 3" (from $149.95) includes 4.5 lb of claws, or 1.5 lb a person for a main course. Buy less if claws are a starter. Large is the sensible middle size, and Frenchy's calls it its most popular: easy to crack and cheaper per pound than Jumbo.

How do you order and eat stone crab claws?

Stone crab claws are sold already cooked. Frenchy's cooks them as soon as they come off the boat so the meat doesn't stick to the shell, and you don't cook them again. The only choice is cold or warm:

  • Cold is the classic, with a creamy mustard dipping sauce. Most seafood counters make their own; Frenchy's sells its house sauce in 8 oz containers.
  • Warm: dip the claws in boiling water for a minute or less to bring them up to temperature. Melted butter is the usual partner.

For a few claws, Frenchy's suggests cracking them with the handle of a butter knife, using about the force you'd use to hammer a nail. Hit too hard and bits of shell end up in the meat. Buy claws whole, not pre-cracked, since cracked meat dries out fast.

At home, store claws in the fridge in open air or the crisper drawer, not sealed in the shipping box or bag. Frenchy's says claws closed up for more than 48 hours start to smell sour, and refrigerated claws keep 3 to 5 days. Frozen, they keep for months. To thaw, soak them overnight in the fridge in a brine of about half a cup of salt per gallon of water.

At a restaurant, ask three things before ordering: the market price (per pound or per order), the claw size, and whether the claws are fresh or frozen. Mid-season, fresh should be standard. At the very start or end, the answer may be frozen.

How are stone crab claws harvested, and why only the claws?

Only claws may be harvested, and only claws at least 2 7/8 inches long. The crab itself goes back in the water, and egg-bearing crabs are off limits entirely. FWC measures a claw in a straight line from the elbow to the tip of the lower, immovable finger.

The fishery depends on the crab's ability to regrow lost claws, which FWC says takes a lot of energy in the form of food. Taking both claws is legal if both are legal size. FWC's point is that a crab left with one claw can gather food faster and recover sooner. Since the 2024-25 season, plastic and wood traps, commercial and recreational, have also needed a 2 3/16-inch escape ring.

Can you catch your own stone crabs? The FWC rules

Yes, but it's trap fishing with its own gear and paperwork, not something you try off the beach on a whim. FWC's recreational rules as of October 2026:

RuleRequirement
LicenseFlorida recreational saltwater fishing license, unless you're exempt (FWC says the license covers crabs)
Trap registrationFree online registration at GoOutdoorsFlorida.com for anyone 16 or older, including people normally exempt from a license. Registration numbers start with "S." Under-16s skip registration but must still mark traps with name and address.
SeasonOct 15 - May 1 (closed May 2)
Minimum sizeClaw 2 7/8 inches, elbow to tip of the lower immovable finger; claws only
Bag limit1 gallon of claws per person or 2 gallons per vessel, whichever is less
Protected crabsNo harvest from egg-bearing crabs
Legal gearStone crab trap (max 5 per person), dip net or landing net. Spears, hooks, grabs or anything that can puncture or crush the crab are illegal.
Trap specsMax 24 x 24 x 24 inches (or 8 cubic feet); degradable cypress or untreated pine panel; 2 3/16-inch escape ring in plastic and wood traps; three 2 3/8-inch rings in wire traps
MarkingName, address and registration number on every trap; buoy at least 6 inches with an "R" at least 2 inches tall (no buoy needed if fished from a dock)
Pulling trapsBy hand only (no mechanical trap puller), in daylight only. Traps can't be placed in navigation channels, and you can't fish a trap registered to someone else.

License costs and exemptions are in our Florida saltwater fishing license guide. For size and bag limits on the fish you're more likely to catch on a short trip, see our Clearwater Beach fishing regulations.

Leave other people's traps alone

Commercial crabbers work their own marked traps all season. A recreational harvester may fish only the traps registered to them, up to five. Don't touch anyone else's trap, commercial or recreational.

How we researched this

This page draws on FWC's stone crab regulation pages and the official websites and posted menus of the restaurants and markets named here. Prices, hours and event details were checked October 4, 2026, before the season opened. We didn't visit, call or taste anything for this page, so confirm supply and price by phone before you go. We're an independent guide, and no business named here pays us.

Frequently asked questions

When does stone crab season start in 2026?

October 15, 2026. The season runs through May 1, so the 2026-27 season closes May 2, 2027. Traps can go in 10 days early but can't be pulled until October 15.

Can I get stone crab right on Clearwater Beach?

On the beach itself, the sure thing is Frenchy's Stone Crab Weekend block party outside Frenchy's Original Cafe, 41 Baymont St, on October 23 and 24, 2026. The rest of the season, look to the Dunedin Causeway (Frenchy's Outpost Bar & Grill and Frenchy's Stone Crab & Seafood Market), Ward's Seafood in Clearwater, and Tarpon Springs. Island Way Grill on Island Estates mentions stone crab on its homepage but not on its posted menus, so call first.

Why are stone crab claws so expensive?

Only the claws are kept, each has to measure at least 2 7/8 inches, and harvest is closed from May 2 to October 14. Every claw comes out of a baited trap, one trap at a time, and is cooked right after landing. Supply swings with each season's catch, so restaurants charge market price.

Are stone crab claws served hot or cold?

Either. They're already cooked. Cold with mustard sauce is traditional; to warm them, dip them in boiling water for a minute or less.

Can I eat stone crab in summer?

Only frozen claws from the previous season, since harvest is closed May 2 through October 14. Some sellers, Frenchy's included, ship flash-frozen claws in the off-season.

Do I need a license to catch stone crabs?

Yes, a Florida recreational saltwater fishing license, unless you're exempt. Anyone 16 or older also needs FWC's free stone crab trap registration, license-exempt or not. The limits are 5 traps and 1 gallon of claws per person (2 gallons per boat, whichever is less).
