Caladesi Island State Park is the best beach near Clearwater Beach. There's no road, it's No. 3 on Dr. Beach's 2026 top 10, and you get there on the $20 ferry from Honeymoon Island, about 12 miles north of Pier 60. For a quick change of scene, Sand Key Park is about 2 miles south ($6 a day, then $3.50 an hour from December 1, 2026). Dog owners: Fort De Soto or Honeymoon Island. Sunsets: Pass-a-Grille.
Key takeaways
- Best overall: Caladesi Island. The ferry is $20 per adult, $10 for ages 6 to 12 and free for 5 and under, on top of the $8 car entry at Honeymoon Island. You get up to four hours on the island.
- Closest quieter beach: Sand Key Park, 1060 Gulf Blvd, roughly 10 minutes from Pier 60, with seasonal lifeguards, two bathhouses and a playground.
- Parking goes up December 1, 2026: the county's flat $6 a day at Sand Key, Fort De Soto and Fred Howard becomes $3.50 an hour, capped at $12 a day, plus tax.
- Dogs: Fort De Soto has the only county beach where dogs are allowed on the sand, off leash. Honeymoon Island has a leashed pet beach at its south end. Caladesi bans pets from its beach and its ferry.
- Storm status, October 2026: all eight are open. The Caladesi ferry has run since July 3, 2025. The far end of Fort De Soto's bay pier is still closed for hurricane repairs.
- No boat? Skip Three Rooker Island. It's a sandbar island with no provisions, and you need your own boat or a charter.

How do the beaches compare on drive time, fees, dogs and facilities?
Drive times are no-traffic routing estimates from the Pier 60 roundabout, based on OpenStreetMap data, with a range added for Gulf Blvd's traffic lights and weekend backups. They aren't timed drives, so use them for planning. Fees, rules and status come from whichever agency runs each beach, as posted in October 2026.

"None listed" means the agency running that beach doesn't list lifeguards. Only Sand Key and Fort De Soto mention them on this list, and both call the coverage seasonal. Clearwater Beach, by contrast, has lifeguards on duty seven days a week, 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., all year, according to the city. Wherever you swim, check the flag first. Florida Healthy Beaches posts water-quality sampling results for Pinellas beaches.
1. Caladesi Island: is the best beach near Clearwater worth the ferry?
Yes, if you can give it half a day. Caladesi Island State Park is an undeveloped barrier island: no hotels, no road, no beach bars. Dr. Beach (coastal scientist Stephen Leatherman) ranks it No. 3 on his 2026 list. The state park lists conchs, whelks and olives among the shells and suggests timing your visit to low tide. Our tide guide shows how to find daylight low tides. On the bay side, more than 3 miles of paddling trail wind through mangrove tunnels, and kayaks can be rented on the island. Our Caladesi Island day-trip guide walks through the whole day.
Getting there. Drive to Honeymoon Island State Park (#1 Causeway Blvd, Dunedin), pay the $8 car entry, and buy ferry tickets at the ticket office inside the park. They aren't sold online. Boats leave hourly from 10 a.m. year-round, and every half hour from mid-February through Labor Day and on weekends. The crossing takes about 20 minutes. You get up to four hours on the island, depending on when you bought your ticket. The ferry runs daily except Thanksgiving and Christmas, weather permitting.
What it costs. Two adults and two kids aged 8 and 10 pay $68 before food: $8 for the car, $40 in adult tickets and $20 for the kids (prices as of October 2026). Cafe Caladesi, steps from the ferry dock, sells burgers, fish and chips and smoothies, and rents chairs, umbrellas and kayaks.
The ferry hasn't allowed beach carts or wagons since January 1, 2023. Strollers, walkers and wheelchairs are fine (compare beach wheelchairs at each park), and so are chairs, umbrellas and coolers you can carry. Pets can't ride, and they're never allowed on Caladesi's beach. Pack food and water, since the park says food service may be limited.
Storm status. Hurricane Helene ripped up the ferry docks and destroyed the ticket office, and the boats sat idle for more than nine months. Service restarted July 3, 2025. The park's current notice says power and water are available at the marina, overnight marina stays are not, and food service may be limited.
Can you walk there? Technically. The inlet that used to split Caladesi from Clearwater Beach has closed, and Dr. Beach lists "a long walk north from Clearwater Beach" as one way in. It's several miles each way in soft sand with no shade, so it only makes sense if you're staying at the north end of the beach and like long walks.
2. Fort De Soto Park: is the best all-day park worth an hour's drive?
Only if you'll stay all day. Fort De Soto, at 3500 Pinellas Bayway South in Tierra Verde, is the biggest park in the Pinellas County system: 1,136 acres on five connected keys, with almost three miles of beach. You get two swim centers (North Beach has a food concession), a Gulf fishing pier with bait and food, a 6.8-mile paved trail, playgrounds, a historic fort and the county's only beach where dogs are allowed. Dr. Beach named it the country's No. 1 beach in 2005, and the county puts attendance at more than 2.7 million visitors a year.
Distance is the problem. It's about 33 miles from Pier 60 down Gulf Blvd, or 38 by the interstate, and a little over an hour with no traffic. Budget 65 to 90 minutes each way. For three hours on the sand, it isn't worth it. For a full day with lunch, the fort and a bike ride, it is. Our Fort De Soto day-trip guide covers routes and timing.
Costs and status, October 2026. Parking is $6 a day through November 30. From December 1 it's $3.50 an hour, capped at $12 a day, plus tax, so a full day hits the cap. It's cashless: pay stations, ParkMobile, Flowbird or pay-by-text, and the app and text options add a $0.35 fee. The park is open 7 a.m. to sunset and, unlike other county parks, stays open the day after Thanksgiving and Christmas. The far end of the bay pier is closed for hurricane repairs, which the county expects to resume in late 2026 once boat ramp work is done. Repaving of about 7 miles of park road and 6.6 miles of trail was scheduled to start in September 2026 and run into early 2027. The park is closed until 9 a.m. on October 18, October 31 and November 14, 2026, for races.
3. Honeymoon Island: what's the easiest wild beach from Clearwater?
Honeymoon Island State Park is a natural beach you can drive to, 12 to 13 miles from Pier 60 (25 to 35 minutes). It has about four miles of shoreline: a swimming beach in the middle, a pet beach at the south end, and a north end the park recommends for shelling and walking. The Osprey Trail runs 2.5 miles through one of the few remaining virgin slash pine stands in South Florida. Our wildlife calendar covers birding on Honeymoon's Osprey Trail and when ospreys are most active. The Rotary Centennial Nature Center is open 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., Wednesday through Sunday. You'll find showers by the boardwalks, a playground in the north-end picnic area, and a concession that rents kayaks, umbrellas and chairs. Our Honeymoon Island guide goes beach by beach.
Fees. $8 per vehicle for up to eight people, $4 for a single-occupant car, $2 for pedestrians, cyclists and extra passengers. Starting one hour before closing, a car gets in for $4. Hours are 8 a.m. to sunset, 365 days a year.
Storm status. Honeymoon partly reopened after Helene on Thanksgiving 2024. The one standing alert on the park's page is about the north end, where erosion has cut the northernmost mile of the sandspit off from the island. The park warns of deep water, sudden depth changes and strong currents. Don't wade across to the tip.
Dogs can use the pet beach at the island's south tip and the nature trail, on a hand-held leash no longer than 6 feet. They can't go on the main swimming beaches or the Caladesi ferry. For off-leash time on the sand, go to Fort De Soto. Our dog-friendly beach guide covers the rules on Clearwater Beach itself.
4. Sand Key Park: where's the closest quieter beach?
Sand Key Park, 1060 Gulf Blvd, sits just over the Clearwater Pass bridge, 2 to 2.5 miles from Pier 60 and about 10 minutes by car. It's a 95-acre county park with the same white sand, topped up by nourishment, as Clearwater Beach and no hotel strip behind it. There are seasonal lifeguards, two bathhouses with changing stalls, outdoor showers, a playground, two shelters with grills, a concession, umbrella and cabana rentals, a boardwalk nature trail and two beach wheelchairs. With small kids, start here. Our Sand Key Park guide has the layout and parking tips.
Fees and hours. Parking is $6 a day through November 30, 2026. From December 1 it's $3.50 an hour, capped at $12 a day, plus tax, so three hours runs $10.50 plus tax. Pay stations take cards only (Visa, Mastercard, American Express) and work by license plate. The park is open 7 a.m. to sunset and closes the day after Thanksgiving and on December 25.
Storm status. Seawall repairs are finished, but the county says one section stays closed until October 2026 while the City of Clearwater uses it to stage equipment for the Clearwater Beach Marina rebuild. The beach and facilities are open.
Dogs. There's a county dog park here, but dogs aren't allowed on the beach. Fort De Soto is the only county beach that allows them.
5. Pass-a-Grille: where's the best sunset beach south of Clearwater?
Pass-a-Grille is the southern tip of St. Pete Beach, an older neighborhood of small houses and cottages with metered parking close to the sand. The beach faces the Gulf to the west, and dinner is a short walk away once the sun goes down, which is why it's our sunset pick. At 23 miles from Pier 60, figure 50 to 65 minutes. Too far for a quick swim, fine for a late afternoon and dinner.
The meters are the catch. St. Pete Beach charges $5 an hour Monday through Thursday and $6 Friday through Sunday, plus $1 an hour from February 1 to April 30, payable by card or ParkMobile (rates as of October 2026). Six hours on a Saturday in March comes to $42, so come for the late afternoon instead. Our Clearwater Beach vs St. Pete Beach comparison covers St. Pete Beach and Pass-a-Grille together.
6. Indian Rocks Beach: is the small-town beach 6 miles south worth it?
Yes, if you want a low-key local beach close by. Indian Rocks Beach is a small residential town with beach accesses off Gulf Blvd, 6 to 7 miles south of Pier 60 (15 to 25 minutes). Pinellas County runs the access at 1700 Gulf Blvd, with restrooms, showers and paid parking. If you need facilities, use that one.
Parking changed in 2026. Since May 18, the city's public beach access spaces have been paid under a pilot program: $4.50 an hour, enforced daily from 8 a.m. to 10 p.m., payable through ParkMobile. Cars with a valid disability placard or plate park free for up to four hours. The county lot follows county rules. The city's alert page lists the county lot at 17th Avenue as closed with reopening expected around October 9, so check before you go.
7. Three Rooker Island: can you get there without a boat?
No. Three Rooker Island is a sandbar island north of Honeymoon Island, part of Anclote Key Preserve State Park, and the park is reachable only by private boat or ferry service. There's no fee, hours are 8 a.m. to sunset, and the park offers no provisions, so bring your own water and supplies. Leave the dog at home: dogs are allowed only on North Anclote Bar. Shorebirds nest in the park, so stay out of any roped-off areas. If you have a boat or plan to rent one, our Three Rooker Island guide covers the trip. Without one, Caladesi is the easier no-road beach.
8. Madeira Beach and St. Pete Beach: are they an upgrade on Clearwater?
Not really. They're variations on the same thing: long sandy beaches with resorts and condos behind them. Madeira Beach is 14.5 miles from Pier 60, and the county's Madeira Beach Access at 14400 Gulf Blvd has 104 spaces at hourly pay stations, plus restrooms and showers. St. Pete Beach is about 21 miles away. Its county access at 4700 Gulf Blvd has 235 spaces, restrooms, showers and three boardwalks, and the city meters charge the same as Pass-a-Grille. Go if you're staying down there or just want a change. Don't drive down from Clearwater expecting a better beach. Our Clearwater Beach vs Madeira Beach comparison lays out the differences.
Which beaches should you skip on a weekend, and when should you go?
On weekends the bottleneck is usually getting in, not finding room on the sand.
- Caladesi: the ferry is the limit. Tickets aren't sold online and stays are capped at four hours, so be at the Honeymoon Island ticket office before the first 10 a.m. boat.
- Sand Key: one county lot, one bridge. The park opens at 7 a.m.; the earlier you arrive, the easier it is. After December 1, a short morning visit costs less than a full day.
- Fort De Soto: not worth it for a few hours. Check the race closures (until 9 a.m. on October 18, October 31 and November 14, 2026) and expect paving on the main road.
- Pass-a-Grille and St. Pete Beach: meters cost most Friday through Sunday and February through April. Come for the last two or three hours before sunset.
- Honeymoon Island: a good evening pick. The $4 sunset entry starts an hour before the park closes at sunset, so check the day's sunset time and subtract an hour.
Weekdays outside spring break are easier everywhere, and drive times drift toward the low end of the ranges above.
How did we rank these beaches?
Five factors, in order of weight. 1. The beach itself: how natural and undeveloped it is, sand, shelling and outside recognition such as Dr. Beach. 2. Effort from Pier 60: estimated distance and drive time, plus any ferry or boat. 3. Cost: entry or parking for a four-hour visit, at October 2026 rates and at the county's December 1, 2026 rates. 4. Facilities and safety: restrooms, showers and lifeguards as listed by the managing agency. 5. Current status: closures or repairs posted since Hurricanes Helene and Milton. Caladesi ranks first despite the ferry because it wins the first factor by a wide margin. Fort De Soto is second because it's strong on everything except distance.
