An umbrella with two chairs costs $40 plus tax at Clearwater Beach from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. A deluxe cabana with two chairs is $50, and a luxury bed with a cabana is $80. From 3 to 5 p.m. those drop to $25, $30 and $40. The city's rental partner sets up at Pier 60 and the Barefoot Beach House, 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. daily, first come, first served. Your own umbrella is fine; tents aren't.
Key takeaways
- The City of Clearwater sets the prices (its rental page was last updated August 27, 2026). Add Pinellas County's 7% sales tax and an umbrella with two chairs comes to $42.80; a cabana, $53.50. Visiting from abroad? Here's how sales tax and tipping work here.
- Extra chairs are $15 plus tax all day. The after-3 p.m. discount only applies to the umbrella, cabana and bed packages.
- You can't reserve ahead. It's first come, first served, with no refunds or rain checks if the weather turns.
- Payment is Apple Pay, Google Pay, Visa, Mastercard, Discover or American Express. Cash isn't on the city's list.
- Rentals go up in the swim areas between the jetty and just north of Pier 60. The city lists no stand on the quieter north end.
- Four mornings of umbrella-and-two-chairs rentals run about $171 with tax. If you can buy and carry your own set for less, buying wins on price.
How much does it cost to rent an umbrella and chairs at Clearwater Beach?
One company handles chair, umbrella and cabana rentals on the city's public beach: Fields, Inc. of Clearwater, which the city partners with to run the Barefoot Beach House, Pier 60 Concessions and the beach rentals. The city publishes the price list. There are two rates: peak, from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m., and evening, from 3 p.m. until the stands close at 5.
| Rental | 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. | 3 p.m. to 5 p.m. | Peak price with 7% tax |
|---|---|---|---|
| Beach umbrella with two chairs | $40 + tax | $25 + tax | $42.80 |
| Deluxe cabana with two chairs | $50 + tax | $30 + tax | $53.50 |
| Luxury bed with deluxe cabana | $80 + tax | $40 + tax | $85.60 |
| Additional chair | $15 + tax | $15 + tax | $16.05 |
Prices are as of October 2026, from the city page last updated August 27, 2026. The tax column is our arithmetic: Florida's 6% state sales tax plus Pinellas County's 1% surtax. The city doesn't say whether the rate depends on when you start renting or how long you stay, so if you show up at 2:30 p.m., ask at the stand before paying.
For two adults who'll be in and out of the water, the umbrella set is enough. Get the cabana for a toddler's nap or for anyone who burns easily. It shades the sides as well as overhead, and it's only $10 more. Our guide to beach days with a toddler has a nap-friendly beach plan. The luxury bed is the splurge. The city describes it only as a "luxury bed with deluxe cabana," so have a look at one before you spend $85.60.
A family of four needs an umbrella set plus two extra chairs: $70 plus tax, or $74.90 for the day. A cabana plus two extra chairs is $80 plus tax ($85.60). Our Clearwater Beach budget guide covers the other costs that add up on a beach day.
The stands close at 5 p.m., so the evening rate gets you about two hours of shade, not an afternoon. It's a good deal if you're heading over after a pool day or a late lunch and just want chairs for the last swim. Planning to be on the sand from 1 p.m.? Pay the $40.
Where are the rental stands, and what hours are they open?
The city lists two rental locations:
- Pier 60, 1 Causeway Blvd, where Causeway Blvd meets the beach in the middle of the island. Our Pier 60 guide covers parking and the park right there.
- Barefoot Beach House, 332 S. Gulfview Blvd, south of Pier 60 along Beach Walk.
Both run 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. daily, weather permitting. According to the city, rentals "can be found in the swimming areas at Clearwater Beach between the jetty and slightly north of Pier 60." That's the busy middle and south stretch. No city stand is listed for the north end, so if you're staying up there, bring your own or ask what your hotel provides.
Lifeguards work 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. daily, year-round. Our lifeguard guide explains the stations and the flag system.
To reach the operator, call (727) 461-7732, the number on the city's rental page, or go to clearwaterbeachumbrellas.com. That site lists the Pier 60 address and hours but not prices, so check rates on the city page.
Can you reserve a cabana or umbrella ahead of time?
No. The city puts it plainly: "Reservations are not accepted in advance, and cabanas and umbrellas are first come, first served." You walk up, pay, and the setup is yours for the day.
On a spring break weekend or a summer Saturday, aim to be there close to the 9 a.m. opening.
Read the weather policy before you pay: "No refunds or rain checks will be given for Clearwater Beach rentals if weather conditions change during the rental period." Afternoon summer thunderstorms are common on the Gulf coast, so look at the radar before handing over $40 at 1 p.m. Bring a card or phone, too. The city lists Apple Pay, Google Pay, Visa, Mastercard, Discover and American Express, and cash isn't on it.
Can you bring your own umbrella, tent or canopy?
An umbrella and chairs, yes. A tent, no. The city's beach rules say no one may "set up tents, shacks or any other temporary shelters" on Clearwater Beach.
Pop-up canopies are a gray area. The code also bars unpermitted temporary structures and tying items to the ground, and a big staked canopy fits that description far better than an umbrella does. Our Clearwater Beach rules guide quotes each section. The safe choice is a beach umbrella or a small freestanding shade shelter, up for the day and taken home when you leave.
If you're bringing your own gear:
- Take it home every evening. Sea turtle nesting season on Clearwater Beach runs May 1 to October 31. FWC's guidance says beach furniture "should be completely removed from the beach" at night, because chairs left on the sand can keep nesting turtles from reaching the upper beach.
- Set up anywhere on the public sand, including the north end, where there's no rental stand. With kids, stay near a staffed lifeguard tower. Our Clearwater Beach with kids guide has more family tips.
Is it cheaper to rent or buy for a 4-day trip?
Rental prices are fixed, so the math is easy. These are four- and seven-day totals for common setups at the city's October 2026 rates, tax included.
| Setup | Per day with tax | 4 days | 7 days |
|---|---|---|---|
| Umbrella + 2 chairs, 3 to 5 p.m. only | $26.75 | $107.00 | $187.25 |
| Umbrella + 2 chairs, peak rate | $42.80 | $171.20 | $299.60 |
| Deluxe cabana + 2 chairs, peak rate | $53.50 | $214.00 | $374.50 |
| Umbrella + 4 chairs (family of four), peak rate | $74.90 | $299.60 | $524.30 |
| Luxury bed + cabana, peak rate | $85.60 | $342.40 | $599.20 |
Store prices for beach umbrellas and chairs swing too much by brand, size and season to pin down, so treat the table as your break-even. Buy an umbrella and two chairs for under about $171 and you've beaten four days of peak rentals. A family of four renting for a week spends more than $500, and at that point buying almost always wins.
Cost isn't the only factor:
- Rent if you're flying in, staying one to three days, or parking in a garage a few blocks back. Hauling an umbrella, chairs and a cooler out every morning and back every evening gets old fast.
- Buy or bring if you're driving down, staying a week, staying on the north end with no stand nearby, or staying in a vacation rental condo or house that may already stock beach gear (check the listing).
- Split the difference by bringing your own chairs and renting only shade, or by renting at the 3 p.m. rate for evening swims and skipping rentals on full-day outings.
Can someone deliver and set up beach chairs for you?
Not on the city's public beach without the city's sign-off. Clearwater's code, Sec. 22.53, says no one other than the parks department or "regularly licensed concessionaires acting by and under the authority of the city" may offer anything for sale or rent on a public beach, or place a stand there, without written authorization from the department.
We couldn't confirm any beach-gear delivery company that has that authorization and a current official website, so none is listed here. If a company offers to set up chairs for you on Clearwater Beach, ask to see its written authorization from the city. Dropping gear at your rental's door for you to carry down yourself is a different thing; that isn't setting up on the beach.
Do Clearwater Beach hotels include beach chairs?
A few do, through a nightly fee. Palm Pavilion Inn, 18 Bay Esplanade on the north end, charges a $25 plus tax daily amenity fee that it says covers beach chair and umbrella rentals, which it values at $30 a day (as of October 2026). Resort fees at other hotels cover different things, and our hotel parking and resort fee guide breaks down what each one includes. Before you count on hotel chairs, ask the front desk where they're set up and whether they're included every day of your stay. Not staying at a resort? A resort day pass is another way to get a hotel's loungers for the day; check what each pass includes.
