Rent the bulky gear. Baby's Away lists a full-size crib at $15 a day ($90 a week) and car seats at $9, and BabyQuip providers start at $16 and $8, plus delivery. On a sunny June or July day the UV index is 3 or higher from about 9:30 a.m. to 5:45 p.m., so do the sand early and late and nap in the middle. Push strollers on Beach Walk and the Pier 60 mat.
Key takeaways
- Sun hours here run later than the familiar "10 to 4" rule. Solar noon falls between about 1:15 and 1:40 p.m. on daylight time, and in June and July the clear-sky UV index still rounds to 5 at 5 p.m.
- From May through August, the clear-sky UV index peaks at 10 to 11 around 1 to 2 p.m. In December it peaks near 4.
- The American Academy of Pediatrics says to keep babies younger than 6 months out of direct sunlight altogether.
- Florida law requires a crash-tested child restraint for children 5 and under in a car you drive, and a separate carrier or integrated seat through age 3.
- Lifeguards work 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. In summer, the low-UV hours fall outside that, so the early and late swims are unguarded.
- We couldn't confirm a single public baby changing table on the beach. Plan to change diapers on a pad in the shade or back at the room.
When is the sun safest for a baby or toddler at Clearwater Beach?
Early morning and late afternoon, and "late" here means later than most parents expect. Clearwater sits about 8 degrees of longitude west of the Eastern time zone's reference meridian, so on daylight saving time the sun is highest between about 1:15 and 1:40 p.m., not at noon. The UV curve shifts with it. Those calm early and late hours are also when biting bugs come out, so pack bug repellents that are safe for little kids.
The table shows the clear-sky UV index for each month at each clock hour, the level on a sunny day. Clouds can lower it and sand and water reflect it, so plan with these numbers and adjust with the day's forecast.

Times are local clock time on the 15th of each month: daylight time from March through October, standard time in November through February. Early March, before the clocks change, runs about an hour earlier on the clock than the March row. EPA's scale calls 1 to 2 low, 3 to 7 moderate to high (protection needed), and 8 and up very high to extreme.
The safe sun window, month by month
This is the same data turned into start and stop times. "UV 3 or higher" is the point where EPA says sun protection is needed. We rounded each start time down and each end time up to the nearest quarter hour, so the window errs on the long side.
| Month | Clear-sky noon UV (median day) | Peak on the top 10% of days | UV 3 or higher | UV 8 or higher |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| January | 4.5 | 5.2 | 10:45 a.m. to 2:45 p.m. | Not reached |
| February | 6.5 | 7.9 | 10 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. | Not reached |
| March | 8.6 | 9.9 | 10:15 a.m. to 5 p.m. | 12:30 to 2:45 p.m. |
| April | 10.2 | 11.3 | 9:45 a.m. to 5:15 p.m. | 11:45 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. |
| May | 10.6 | 11.5 | 9:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. | 11:15 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. |
| June | 11.2 | 12.0 | 9:15 a.m. to 5:45 p.m. | 11:15 a.m. to 3:45 p.m. |
| July | 11.2 | 11.8 | 9:30 a.m. to 5:45 p.m. | 11:15 a.m. to 4 p.m. |
| August | 10.9 | 11.7 | 9:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. | 11:30 a.m. to 3:45 p.m. |
| September | 9.5 | 10.5 | 9:45 a.m. to 5 p.m. | 11:45 a.m. to 3 p.m. |
| October | 7.2 | 8.3 | 10:15 a.m. to 4:15 p.m. | Briefly, on the top 10% of days |
| November | 5.0 | 5.8 | 10 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. | Not reached |
| December | 3.9 | 4.4 | 10:45 a.m. to 2 p.m. | Not reached |
In summer the window opens before 10 a.m. and runs well past 4 p.m. From November through January it shrinks to three to five midday hours, so a December afternoon after 2 p.m. is low-UV beach time with lifeguards still on duty.
Data: the KNMI/ESA TEMIS UV archive (version 2.0) daily file for its St. Petersburg, Florida site, whose 0.25-degree grid cell is centered at 27.875° N, 82.625° W, about 14 miles from Pier 60. Its UVIEF column is the cloud-free UV index at local solar noon, computed from satellite ozone data. Date range: every day from January 1, 2016 to December 31, 2025 (3,653 days). Method: we took each month's median noon value (and the 90th percentile for the "top 10%" column), then spread it across the day using the solar-angle dependence in Madronich's clear-sky UV index formula (UVI proportional to the cosine of the solar zenith angle raised to the 2.42 power; Photochemistry and Photobiology, 2007). Sun angles come from the NOAA Solar Calculator equations for Pier 60 on the 15th of each month. As a check, we also ran Madronich's full formula with TEMIS's own ozone values: TEMIS's noon numbers come in 8 to 17 percent lower on 9 days in 10, a steady offset. So we take only the shape of the curve from the formula and the level from TEMIS. These are modeled clear-sky values, not readings from a UV meter on the beach. Retrieved: October 5, 2026.
What the AAP says about babies and sun
The American Academy of Pediatrics, on its parent site HealthyChildren.org, is direct about the youngest babies: "Babies under 6 months of age should be kept out of direct sunlight. Move your baby to the shade under a tree, umbrella or stroller canopy." It recommends lightweight clothing that covers the arms and legs and brimmed hats that shade the neck. For babies under 6 months, the AAP allows sunscreen on small areas such as the face only when protective clothing and shade aren't available.
For older babies and toddlers, the AAP recommends a broad-spectrum sunscreen of at least SPF 15 (up to SPF 50), reapplied every 2 hours and after swimming, sweating or toweling off, and limiting sun between 10 a.m. and 4 p.m. It also warns that UV "can bounce back from sand, water, snow or concrete," which is a fair description of a Clearwater Beach afternoon. The tables above add one local detail: in summer, the strong sun here lasts well past 4 p.m. Ask your pediatrician about your own child's skin.
How do you plan a beach day around naps?
Split the day in two. Do a sand session before the UV climbs past 3, go back to the room or a shaded pool for lunch and the long nap, and return once it drops back under 3.
| Months | Morning beach block (UV under 3) | Midday (nap, pool, indoors) | Evening beach block | Lifeguards on duty during low UV? |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| June, July, August | Arrive by 8 a.m., off the sand by 9:15 to 9:30 a.m. | About 9:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. | After 5:30 to 5:45 p.m.; sunset 8:10 to 8:30 p.m. Check summer storm timing first. | No. Both blocks fall outside 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. |
| April, May, September | Until about 9:30 to 9:45 a.m. | About 9:30 or 9:45 a.m. to 5 to 5:30 p.m. | After 5 to 5:30 p.m.; sunset about 7:35 to 8:15 p.m. | No. Low UV ends before 10 a.m. and returns at or after 5 p.m. |
| March and October | Until about 10:15 a.m. | About 10:15 a.m. to 4:15 p.m. (October) or 5 p.m. (March) | After 4:15 p.m. in October, 5 p.m. in March; sunset about 7:00 p.m. (Oct. 15) and 7:40 p.m. (Mar. 15) | Partly. 10 to 10:15 a.m., and 4:15 to 5 p.m. in October |
| November through February | Until about 10 to 10:45 a.m. | From about 10 to 10:45 a.m. until 2 to 3:30 p.m. | After 2 to 3:30 p.m.; sunset about 5:40 to 6:25 p.m. | Yes. The whole afternoon block until 5 p.m. |
Sunset times are for the 15th of each month; our Clearwater Beach sunset times by month table has every date.
The City of Clearwater says lifeguards are on duty 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. daily. From April through September, the low-UV morning and evening blocks fall almost entirely outside those hours, so nobody is in the towers. Keep a toddler within arm's reach at the waterline and check the flag before you set up. Our lifeguard guide explains the stations and flags.
For the midday stretch, a hotel pool with shade or the room itself beats an umbrella on hot sand. Our Clearwater Beach hotel pools guide compares the pools. If you'd rather stay out, the city's concessionaire rents umbrellas and cabanas at Pier 60 and the Barefoot Beach House from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. daily, weather permitting. Prices and the rules on bringing your own shade are in our chair and umbrella rental guide.

How we built this table: Baby's Away prices come from the product list on its Tampa-St. Pete location page, and BabyQuip prices from its Clearwater Beach page, both retrieved October 5, 2026. Prices are as of October 2026 and before tax and delivery. BabyQuip's numbers are the cheapest listing across its local providers, so a specific provider may charge more. Its own FAQ puts cribs at $12 to $22 a day. Check before you go.
A week of the four big items from Baby's Away (crib, convertible car seat, full-size stroller and high chair) comes to $228 before delivery and tax. Swap the crib for a pack-n-play and it's $186. On every item we checked, its weekly rate equals six daily rates, so the seventh day is free. Baby's Away says crib rentals include a mattress, mattress pad and fitted sheet, and that it can't install car seats for liability reasons, so plan to fit the seat yourself. Before renting a crib, ask your hotel whether it lends one. If you are still deciding on a vacation rental or hotel, crib and high chair needs are worth weighing. You can reach Baby's Away toll-free at (800) 252-0254.
Do you need a car seat for a rental car, taxi or rideshare?
In a car you drive, yes. Section 316.613 of the Florida Statutes requires a crash-tested, federally approved child restraint for children 5 and younger. Through age 3, it must be "a separate carrier or a vehicle manufacturer's integrated child seat." At 4 and 5, a booster seat also counts. A violation is a moving violation with 3 points on the driver's license.
The same statute exempts chauffeur-driven hired vehicles, such as a taxi or limo, when they're "hired and used for the transportation of persons for compensation." The next sentence of that subsection says it is the parent's or guardian's responsibility to comply with the section, so don't read the exemption as a free pass. It's a legal carve-out, not a safety finding. If you'll take taxis or rideshares from the airport, bringing or renting a seat you can install yourself is the only way to be sure your child rides in one.
On the island, kids 8 and under ride the Jolley Trolley free, according to the operator's fare table.
Where can you push a stroller, and where are the restrooms?
Not across the open sand, which is wide and soft. Stick to the paved spots and the access mats near Pier 60. This list comes from our verified beach wheelchair and access mat guide and our restrooms and showers map, rechecked against city and county pages in October 2026.
| Spot | Where | Why it works with a stroller | Closest restroom |
|---|---|---|---|
| Beach Walk | Along S. Gulfview Blvd., from Pier 60 south to the Opal Sands | Paved promenade with rinse-shower towers along it. The county tourism bureau also lists a mat at the Lot 32 beach access, 420 S. Gulfview Blvd. | Barefoot Beach House (332 S. Gulfview Blvd.) and 410 S. Gulfview Blvd. |
| Pier 60 Park | 370 Mandalay Ave. | The city lists paved walking trails, a playground and picnic tables; open 7 a.m. to 9 p.m. | In the park, open during park hours |
| Pier 60 access mat | Starts at Beach Walk just south of Pier 60 | Firm mat onto the sand: 100 feet from May 15 to Oct. 31, 260 feet from Nov. 1 to May 14. It doesn't reach the water | Pier 60 Park |
| Rockaway beach access | 4 Rockaway St. (city Lot 36) | The county tourism bureau lists a mat here, pulled during turtle nesting season; call Tower 0 at (727) 444-8580 to confirm it's down | Rockaway restrooms, 532 Mandalay Ave. |
| Sand Key Park (Pinellas County) | 1060 Gulf Blvd., Sand Key | The county lists a boardwalk, outdoor showers, playground equipment and two bathhouses | On site (bathhouses with changing stalls and restrooms) |
| Clearwater Marine Aquarium | 249 Windward Passage | Its FAQ welcomes your own stroller but says it has none to lend | Inside the aquarium (admission required) |
The sand between Pier 60 and the Barefoot Beach House is the most practical stretch with a baby. Two restrooms, the playground, shower towers and Lifeguard Tower 0 are all within a few minutes on foot. North of the Rockaway restrooms the city lists no other public restroom, so the quieter north end means a long walk back.
Are there baby changing tables on Clearwater Beach?
None that any official source confirms. We only list a changing table when the city, the county or the venue says one exists, and none did. Here's what each source we checked actually lists:
| Source checked (October 2026) | What it lists | Baby changing table mentioned? |
|---|---|---|
| City of Clearwater, Pier 60 Park page | Playground, paved trails, picnic tables, restrooms open during park hours | No |
| City request for proposals 20-26 and 2026 lease for the Pier 60 and Barefoot Beach House concessions (cover the beach restroom buildings) | Cleaning and stocking duties for the beach restroom buildings | No |
| Pinellas County, Sand Key Park page | Two bathhouses with separate changing stalls (for clothes) and restrooms | No |
| Clearwater Marine Aquarium FAQ | Strollers welcome, none to borrow; eat on the first floor only | No |
A restroom may turn out to have one, but don't plan around it. Pack a portable changing pad and change in the shade or back at the room.
Where is the calmest water, and which hotels suit families?
That's on our Clearwater Beach with kids guide, which covers the water, family hotels and things to do with older children. This page sticks to under-3s: gear, sun and access. Before every swim, check today's beach flag. If you are thinking about a water park day, check the water-park height rules for little ones first.
The UV tables are our own calculation from KNMI/ESA TEMIS satellite data, as described above. AAP guidance is quoted from HealthyChildren.org, and EPA's UV categories come from its UV index scale page. Rental prices come from Baby's Away and BabyQuip's own pages, the car seat rules from the Florida Statutes, and access and restroom details from City of Clearwater, Pinellas County, Visit St. Pete/Clearwater and Clearwater Marine Aquarium pages and documents, all checked October 4 and 5, 2026. We didn't rent any gear or visit any of these places for this page. We're an independent guide, and no business named here pays us.
Frequently asked questions
Is Clearwater Beach good for a toddler?
Yes, if you plan around the sun. The stretch around Pier 60 puts a playground, restrooms, a paved promenade and an access mat within a few minutes' walk of each other, and two services deliver cribs, car seats and strollers. The hard part is the summer UV, which stays at 3 or higher from about 9:30 a.m. to 5:45 p.m. on sunny days.
What time is the UV index lowest at Clearwater Beach?
Before about 9:15 to 9:30 a.m. and after about 5:30 to 5:45 p.m. from June through August, based on clear-sky TEMIS data. In December and January it's under 3 before about 10:45 a.m. and after about 2 to 2:45 p.m. The window table on this page gives every month.
Can I put sunscreen on my 4-month-old?
The AAP's first advice for babies under 6 months is to keep them out of direct sunlight, in shade and covered with lightweight clothing and a brimmed hat. It says sunscreen can go on small areas such as the face only when protective clothing and shade aren't available. Ask your pediatrician about your own baby.
Can I rent a crib at Clearwater Beach?
Yes. As of October 2026, Baby's Away (Tampa-St. Pete) lists a full-size crib at $15 a day or $90 a week, including mattress, pad and sheet. BabyQuip providers start at $16 a day. Both deliver to hotels, and delivery is extra.
Do I need a car seat in a taxi in Florida?
Florida's child restraint law, s. 316.613, exempts chauffeur-driven vehicles hired to carry passengers for compensation, such as taxis, and the same subsection puts the duty to comply on the parent or guardian. It does apply to any car you drive yourself, including a rental: children through age 3 need a separate carrier or integrated child seat. For taxis and rideshares, bringing or renting a seat is the only way to know your child will ride in one.
