The short answer

No ferry or tour boat lists Three Rooker Island as a stop. It's a sandbar island in Anclote Key Preserve State Park, about 9 miles north of Clearwater Beach Marina in a straight line, so you need a rental boat, a charter or a kayak. Entry is free, 8 a.m. to sunset. There are no restrooms, shade or trash cans. No boat? Odyssey Cruises in Tarpon Springs runs to neighboring Anclote Key for $27.99 per adult (as of October 2026).

Key takeaways

  • Three Rooker is one of four islands in Florida's Anclote Key Preserve State Park (727-241-6106).
  • The Tarpon Springs tour boats (Odyssey Cruises, Spongeorama Cruise Lines) land on Anclote Key, about 4 miles north, not Three Rooker.
  • An 1,800-foot stretch of Three Rooker's beach closes May 1 to August 1 for nesting shorebirds. Posted areas are off limits in any month.
  • No dogs on Three Rooker or Anclote Key. Only North Anclote Bar allows them, on a 6-foot leash.
  • If you were born on or after Jan. 1, 1988, you need a Florida boater ID card or FWC's 90-day temporary certificate to drive a rental boat of 10 hp or more.
  • No garbage cans anywhere. Bring water and shade, and take your trash home.

Can you get to Three Rooker Island without your own boat?

Not on a scheduled trip. Florida State Parks lists four ferry services for Anclote Key Preserve State Park. The two that leave from the Tarpon Springs Sponge Docks land on Anclote Key, the big island with the lighthouse. The other two, ParrotDise Express (Dunedin Marina) and Island Paradise Charters (Port Richey area), don't name Three Rooker on their websites. ParrotDise's 4-hour snorkeling and shelling trip ($71.99 as of October 2026) goes to a "semi-private island" it doesn't name, so ask before you book.

That leaves a rental boat, a private charter willing to go there, or a paddle. If what you want is a wild, undeveloped island without running a boat yourself, Caladesi Island has a regular ferry and restrooms, and it's closer to Clearwater Beach.

Where is Three Rooker Island, and who manages it?

Three Rooker sits in the Gulf off Tarpon Springs, north of Honeymoon Island and south of Anclote Key. It's part of Anclote Key Preserve State Park, which Florida State Parks manages: 11,773 acres, nearly all of it open Gulf water. The park is open 8 a.m. to sunset, 365 days a year, and there's no entry fee. A resident ranger lives on Anclote Key. Nobody is stationed on Three Rooker.

Don't expect the island to match the map. The Friends of Anclote Key, the park's volunteer support group, say Three Rooker Bar "now exists as two small eroding islands" that keep changing shape, size and number. The name comes from three wooden structures, long gone, that were built on the bar to collect guano. Treat any chart or satellite image as approximate.

How do you get there from Clearwater Beach?

Distances marked "map estimate" are straight lines between coordinates. Real boat routes run longer once you follow the channels and slow down for no-wake zones.

Driving to the Tarpon Springs boats. The Sponge Docks are about 17 miles by road from the Clearwater Beach roundabout. A routing estimate puts that at about 35 minutes with no traffic; allow 45 to 50. Odyssey's 2-hour cruise boards at 10:30 a.m., 12:30, 2:30 and 4:30 p.m., with times that vary by season. Its ticket-booth lot charges $8 to park. If you're making a day of it, our Tarpon Springs day trip guide covers the Sponge Docks themselves.

Renting a boat. Clearwater Beach Marina has no drawbridge between it and the Gulf. The docks are still under renovation, though. As of October 2026 the city's marina page says there are no transient or day docks, and the new fuel dock isn't operating while a temporary one is installed. The city says tourism boat operators are working from their new slips along Coronado Drive. Ask whether your boat comes fully fueled. If you're launching your own boat, our ramp guide covers the public launch options. The Clearwater Beach Marina guide has the layout.

Check the boater ID rule before you rent

Florida requires anyone born on or after Jan. 1, 1988 to have a Boating Safety Education ID card to operate a boat with 10 horsepower or more. No card? FWC's temporary certificate is a 25-question online exam, and you need 19 right to pass. It's good for 90 days, in Florida only. Proof of a NASBLA-approved course from another state also counts. Carry it with a photo ID.

What do you need to know about tides, sandbars and anchoring?

The water up here is shallow, so the tide decides a lot. NOAA's Anclote Key station (8726917) lists a mean range of about 2.65 feet, and about 3.3 feet between average higher-high and lower-low water. That's enough to strand a pontoon you nosed onto the bar at high tide. Check the day's predictions (our guide to reading the Clearwater tide chart explains how), arrive on a rising or high tide, and leave before the low.

  • There's no public dock. The Friends of Anclote Key say boaters must anchor offshore or beach their boats. The dock by the lighthouse is for official park use only, and the state park site still carries an October 2024 storm-recovery closure notice for it.
  • Expect to wade. The same group warns your feet, and possibly your thighs, will get wet getting ashore. Rent a boat with a ladder.
  • Mind the seagrass. All plants and animals in the park are protected, and the seagrass beds are where the fish are. Idle through the shallows and don't drop anchor on grass.
  • Give the north end of Honeymoon Island room on the way up. A park alert from April 2024, still posted in October 2026, says erosion has cut the northernmost mile of Honeymoon's sandspit off from the main island. It warns of deep water and rapidly changing depths in the gap.

Summer afternoon thunderstorms build fast, and there's no shelter on the island. If the sky darkens, head in.

When are areas closed for nesting birds, and what are the rules?

Three Rooker matters more to birds than to boaters. The park brochure says large numbers of shorebirds nest there in summer: American oystercatchers, royal and least terns, black skimmers, and snowy and Wilson's plovers. FWC lists the oystercatcher, snowy plover, black skimmer and least tern as state-threatened. Our wildlife guide covers the shorebird nesting rules and what the posted signs mean. Green and loggerhead sea turtles come ashore at night to nest on the park's beaches from May through October.

RuleWhat the park and FWC say
Seasonal closureAn 1,800-foot section of Three Rooker's beach is closed May 1 to Aug. 1 for nesting
Posted areasNever enter areas posted with shorebird or seabird signs. If the birds get agitated, you're too close
DogsNot allowed on Three Rooker or Anclote Key. Allowed only on North Anclote Bar, on a leash of 6 feet or less, and kept out of posted areas
Kites and dronesFWC says don't fly kites near nesting areas. The Friends of Anclote Key say drones aren't allowed on or near Anclote Key
Shells and wildlifeCollecting live shellfish is prohibited, and the park protects sand dollars too. Shell collecting on the beaches is allowed
Fireworks and huntingProhibited
FishingA Florida saltwater license may be required
TrashNo garbage cans on the islands. Take all trash off with you

The seasonal closure isn't in effect in October, but the islands are feeding and resting grounds all year, so obey any signs you find. FWC notes that one dog passing near a colony can make all the birds panic and leave their nests exposed to the sun.

What should you bring, since there are no facilities?

Three Rooker has nothing on it: no restrooms, no water, no shade structures and no trash cans. Anclote Key has only a little more. The park lists two compostable toilets there, one at the north end and one near the lighthouse, and there's no fresh water anywhere in the park. Pack for a full day on your own.

  • More drinking water than you think you need, plus food. Odyssey lets you bring food on its boats but not your own drinks or coolers.
  • Your own shade. A beach umbrella with a sand anchor, or a boat with a bimini top. See our notes on renting versus buying a beach umbrella.
  • Water shoes. You'll be wading in from the boat.
  • Bug spray if you stay toward sunset. The Friends group says Anclote Key is well known for biting gnats ("no-see-ums") and mosquitoes. Our bug guide covers which bugs bite and which repellents work.
  • Trash bags, and a mesh bag for empty shells. Our shelling guide covers what's legal to keep.
  • A charged phone in a dry bag and the park number, 727-241-6106. There are no lifeguards in any part of the park.

Can you visit Anclote Key and its lighthouse?

Yes, and without a boat it's the easier day. Anclote Key is the park's largest island, about 4 miles long and roughly 3 miles off Tarpon Springs. The 110-foot lighthouse at its south end went into service on Sept. 15, 1887.

The official word on the lighthouse is mixed. The state park site still shows an October 2024 storm-recovery closure for the dock, boardwalk and lighthouse, plus a February 2025 note sending tour questions to the Friends of Anclote Key. The Friends' site lists climbing open houses on the second weekend of each month, Friday to Sunday, 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., October through May, with a $7 donation requested. The next ones are Oct. 9, 2026 (booked through Odyssey Cruises) and Oct. 10 and 11 for private boats and charters. Check the Friends homepage for weather cancellations. The regular Odyssey and Spongeorama trips put you on the beach, not inside the lighthouse.

Camping is allowed only at the north end of Anclote Key. It's primitive and free, but you have to register with the resident ranger at 727-638-4447. The ferries don't drop off overnight campers, so you'll need your own boat. For campgrounds you can drive to, see other camping near Clearwater.

Verdict by traveler type:

  • You've rented a boat or have one: Three Rooker. Arrive near high tide, and stay clear of the posted bird areas.
  • No boat, want a wild island: Caladesi, by ferry from Honeymoon Island. It's closer to Clearwater Beach than Tarpon Springs is, and it has restrooms.
  • No boat, want the lighthouse or a dolphin trip: an Anclote Key tour boat from the Tarpon Springs Sponge Docks. Pair it with lunch on Dodecanese Blvd.
  • Traveling with a dog: Honeymoon Island's pet beach. Skip Three Rooker entirely.
  • Young kids, or anyone who needs a restroom: Honeymoon Island. Three Rooker has nothing.
  • Experienced sea kayakers: Fred Howard Park to Anclote Key on a calm morning. See our kayaking guide for calmer paddles closer to the beach.
How we researched this

Compiled from Florida State Parks, the Friends of Anclote Key, FWC, NOAA, Pinellas County, the City of Clearwater and the tour operators' own websites listed below. Prices, schedules and closures were checked against those sites in October 2026. Distances marked as map estimates are straight lines between coordinates, not measured routes. We're an independent guide: no business named here pays us, and we don't book trips.
