The short answer

Yes, if you give it a full day. Fort De Soto Park (3500 Pinellas Bayway S., Tierra Verde) is 30 to 38 miles from Pier 60, 65 to 90 minutes each way. Parking is $6 a day through November 30, 2026, then $3.50 an hour capped at $12 plus tax. You get almost three miles of beach, the county's only dog beach, a historic fort and the Egmont Key ferry ($45 adults). For a half day, stay closer.

Key takeaways

  • Open 7 a.m. to sunset every day of the year, including the day after Thanksgiving and Christmas Day, when other county parks close.
  • Parking is cashless: pay stations, an app or pay-by-text (the last two add $0.35). From December 1, 2026, a full day costs the $12 cap plus tax.
  • Dogs can run off leash, under voice control, on the dog beach by the dog park. The fort, the other beaches and the piers are off limits to them.
  • Hubbard's Marina runs Egmont Key ferries from the park at 9 and 11 a.m. daily (October 2026). Book ahead and check in an hour early.
  • Work under way this fall: road and trail repaving through early 2027, boat ramp dock replacement, and the far end of the Bay Pier is still closed for hurricane repairs.

Is Fort De Soto worth the drive from Clearwater Beach?

Yes, as long as you treat it as a full day out. Fort De Soto is the largest park in the Pinellas County system: 1,136 acres spread over five connected keys, with almost three miles of beach and no hotels behind the sand. On top of that come two swim centers, two fishing piers, a 6.8-mile paved trail, a canoe trail and a fort the Army started building in 1898. "Dr. Beach" ranked it the No. 1 beach in the country in 2005.

For a quick swim, no. You'll spend two to three hours in the car round trip, and the park closes at sunset. With only a morning to spare, try Sand Key Park, one bridge south of Clearwater Beach at the same county parking rate, or Honeymoon Island State Park, the closer undeveloped beach to the north. Our ranking of the best beaches near Clearwater Beach puts them side by side.

Your starting point: Clearwater Beach, with hotels right behind the sand. Fort De Soto's beaches are park land, an hour or more to the south.

How long is the drive from Clearwater Beach to Fort De Soto?

Two routes from Pier 60 make sense. The distances and free-flow times below come from OSRM routing on OpenStreetMap data, run October 4, 2026. The ranges cover the park entrance at the low end and North Beach at the high end. These are estimates, not timed drives, so the "plan for" column adds a buffer for traffic and the roadwork inside the park.

Route from Pier 60DistanceFree-flow estimatePlan for
Interstate: SR 60 off the beach, then US 19 and I-275 south to the Pinellas Bayway, then SR 679 into the parkAbout 35-38 miAbout 58-65 min65-85 min
Beach road: south over the Clearwater Pass bridge, then Gulf Blvd through the beach towns to the Bayway and SR 679About 30-33 miAbout 68-76 min75-90 min

The interstate is usually quicker. Gulf Blvd is shorter on paper but crawls through a long run of traffic lights, so it works better as the drive home, when you might stop for dinner along the beaches.

Tolls on the last stretch

Both routes finish on the Pinellas Bayway and SR 679 through Tierra Verde, which are toll roads. FDOT's toll chart (rates in effect since Sept. 22, 2023) puts the trip in at $0.86 with SunPass or $1.89 by plate: $0.58 at a Bayway plaza plus $0.28 at the South Plaza on SR 679, with nothing charged on the way out. A rental car adds the rental company's own toll fee on top, so check its terms before you go.

What does parking cost at Fort De Soto?

There's no separate entry fee. You pay to park, and the price depends on the date (as of October 2026):

WhenBeach parkingHow to pay
Through November 30, 2026$6 per vehicle, per dayCashless. Pay stations around the park (Visa, Mastercard, American Express), a mobile parking app or pay-by-text. The app and text options add a $0.35 fee.
From December 1, 2026$3.50 an hour, capped at $12 a day, plus tax
Annual Beach Pass (from October 1, 2026)$95, or $70 with the military discount, plus taxPinellas County annual permit

The "$6 parking" figure on older pages holds only until November 30. After that, anything past about three and a half hours hits the $12 cap. If you're staying the winter and plan plenty of county beach days, the $95 annual pass pays for itself after about eight capped days.

Hubbard's Marina's ferry pages still list "Parking $5". The county sets the park's rate, so budget for the county figure above.

What's closed or under construction right now?

The park is open. Pinellas County's "Know Before You Go" page (updated October 2, 2026) lists these projects for this fall:

  • Repaving: about 7 miles of road and 6.6 miles of trail, September 2026 to early 2027.
  • Boat ramp docks: the floating docks are being replaced in phases, with three to four ramps closed for about a month at a time. Full reopening is expected in winter.
  • Bay Pier: the far end is closed for hurricane repairs, which pick up again once the ramp work is done (expected late 2026). The county lists no closure for the Gulf Pier.
  • Race mornings: the park is closed until 9 a.m. on October 18, October 31 and November 14, 2026.

Should you go to North Beach or East Beach?

The paved trail links both swim centers, and the real difference between them is food. The park's beach snack bar sits at North Beach and opens Thursday to Sunday, 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. (as of October 2026). Pick North Beach for a beach day with lunch close by, and fall back on East Beach if the North Beach lots fill up. On weekdays, pack food or use the Pier Shop at the Gulf Pier (daily, 7:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m.). Every concession is cashless.

Lifeguards are seasonal, so read the signs, and swim only from the beach. Clearwater Beach has lifeguards on duty seven days a week, 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.

Can you bring your dog to Fort De Soto?

Yes. Pinellas County says Fort De Soto is the only county park where dogs are allowed on the beach, in one designated area. The rules:

  • The dog park has fenced areas for large and small dogs (just under three acres together) with water stations. The entrance to the dog beach is at the far southwest corner of the dog park.
  • On the dog beach, dogs can be off leash but must be under voice control.
  • Everywhere else, use a leash no longer than 6 feet. Dogs aren't allowed at the historic fort, on the other beaches, piers or boardwalks, in picnic shelters or restrooms, on playgrounds, or on either ferry. They must be licensed and vaccinated and wear their tags.

Clearwater Beach itself bans pets from the public bathing beach (service animals excepted). Our guide to bringing a dog to Clearwater Beach covers the closer options, including Honeymoon Island's leashed pet beach.

How do the Egmont Key and Shell Key ferries work?

Hubbard's Marina (based at 170 Johns Pass Boardwalk, Madeira Beach) runs both ferries, and both leave from inside Fort De Soto, so you still pay to park. The schedule as of October 2026:

Egmont Key ferryShell Key ferry
Departures9 a.m. and 11 a.m. daily; 2 p.m. on Tue, Thu, Sat and SunAfter Labor Day: 10 a.m., noon and 2 p.m. on Wed, Fri, Sat, Sun and Mon
Return pickupsAbout 5 hours total, with about 3 hours on the island12:30, 2:30 and 4:30 p.m. (you choose a pickup)
Ages 12+$45$35
Ages 3-11$25$20
Age 2 and underFreeFree
On the islandNo restrooms or shopsNo restrooms or shops

Egmont Key is the bigger outing. Hubbard's describes a working lighthouse (the tower is closed to the public), the remains of Fort Dade (built in 1898), a sunken battery you can snorkel, and a large part of the island closed to visitors for nesting birds and sea turtles. Snorkel gear rents separately on the day, and snorkeling depends on conditions. Shell Key is the quieter shelling trip.

Alcohol, glass, pets, kites and drones aren't allowed on either island. Bring water, food and shade, because there's nothing to buy once you're ashore (the docked boat has a restroom and a snack galley). For Egmont, Hubbard's strongly recommends booking ahead and checking in 60 minutes early, and cancelling within 24 hours costs 50% of the fare. Hubbard's says the Egmont trip runs "nearly every day" in fall and winter, so check its current schedule.

Confirm the boarding spot

Hubbard's Egmont page names the Fort De Soto boat ramp as the departure point, but another line on the same page says the Bay Pier. With dock work at the ramps this fall, ask where to check in when you book. Reservations are by phone at (727) 393-1947 or through Hubbard's website.

Making a 9 a.m. Egmont check-in means leaving Clearwater Beach around 6:45 a.m., which is why the 11 a.m. boat is the realistic choice. If that still sounds like too much driving, the Caladesi Island ferry gives you a similar island day. It leaves from Honeymoon Island, about 13 miles north of Pier 60.

What else is there besides the beach?

The fort. The Army began building the first Mullet Key post in 1898. Battery Laidley holds what the county calls the last four surviving carriage-mounted 12-inch seacoast mortars in the continental United States. The Quartermaster Museum, open daily 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. with free admission (donations accepted), has Spanish-American War items, artifacts recovered in the park and World War II history.

Trails. The 6.8-mile paved recreation trail is 12 feet wide and closed to motor vehicles. It connects the campground (compare it with other camping and RV parks near Clearwater), both swim centers and the fort. A 2,200-foot barrier-free nature trail is aimed at visitors of all abilities. Expect some trail sections to close during the repaving.

Kayaks, bikes and beach gear. The park's concessionaire, Fort De Soto Hospitality (3550 Pinellas Bayway S., (727) 618-7132), rents kayaks, bikes, beach chairs and umbrellas, cashless only. Its Kayak Outpost opens daily at 9:30 a.m., weather permitting, and lists a 4:30 or 5:30 p.m. close depending on the season. Paddlers also get a 2.25-mile canoe trail.

Fishing. The Gulf Pier has bait and food. Both piers are open 7 a.m. to sunset, and the county requires a fishing license everywhere in the park, piers included.

Fort De Soto vs Clearwater Beach: how do they compare?

Verdict by traveler type:

  • Dog owners: go. It's the only county beach where your dog can be on the sand.
  • Families with school-age kids: go for a full day of bikes, the fort and a picnic, and check the lifeguard signs.
  • Couples: go on a weekday. The park shuts at sunset, so watch it from Pass-a-Grille on the way home.
  • Toddlers or a short trip: skip it. Sand Key Park is a county beach about 10 minutes from Pier 60.
  • No car: skip it. At 30-plus miles each way, it only makes sense with a car (see Clearwater Beach without a car for what's easy to reach).
  • Island seekers: Egmont Key is worth it if you're driving south anyway. Otherwise Caladesi is closer.
