The short answer

For a beach vacation, base at Clearwater Beach: the Gulf is outside your hotel, the Sunsets at Pier 60 festival is free every night, and city lots cost $3.50 an hour. Base in downtown St. Petersburg if museums and restaurants matter more: the Dalí Museum ($32) and the free St. Pete Pier are there, but the nearest Gulf beach is about 10 miles away. The two are 23.5 miles apart, so plan on 45 to 65 minutes by car.

This page compares Clearwater Beach with downtown St. Petersburg, the city on Tampa Bay. If you meant the Gulf beach town of St. Pete Beach, see our Clearwater Beach vs St. Pete Beach comparison instead. And if you're weighing mainland Clearwater against the beach, that's a different decision, covered in Clearwater vs Clearwater Beach: mainland or island.

Key takeaways

  • Clearwater Beach is a beach town: Gulf-front hotels, lifeguarded sand, Pier 60 and a walkable strip of bars and seafood restaurants. Downtown St. Pete is a city: museums, a 1,380-foot pier on Tampa Bay, and dining districts along Central Avenue.
  • Pier 60 to the St. Pete Pier is 23.4 miles; to the Dalí Museum, 23.5 miles. Routing software puts it at about 40 minutes on empty roads; plan for 45 to 65.
  • The nearest Gulf beach to downtown St. Pete is St. Pete Beach, about 10 miles from the Pier. Spa Beach at the Pier is a small bay beach, not the Gulf.
  • Parking, as of October 2026: Clearwater Beach city lots $3.50 an hour, street meters $4. Downtown St. Pete's SouthCore Garage is $2 an hour with a $16 daily max, and Pier lots run $2 to $2.50 an hour.
  • Downtown St. Pete has free circulators (the Downtown Looper and the Central Avenue Trolley). Clearwater Beach's Jolley Trolley is $2.25 a ride, cash only.
  • Both are about the same distance from Tampa International: 20.6 miles from Pier 60, 21.3 miles from the St. Pete Pier.

Which is the better base, Clearwater Beach or St. Pete?

Pick the one that matches what you'll do most days, then day-trip to the other. If most days start with a towel and end with a sunset over the Gulf, stay at Clearwater Beach. Driving to the beach every morning from downtown St. Pete gets old, and downtown's waterfront faces east over Tampa Bay, so you won't watch the sun set into the water from your hotel.

If most days are museums, long lunches, galleries and a cocktail bar after dinner, stay in downtown St. Pete. Clearwater Beach has plenty of restaurants and bars, but it has no museum district, and its evenings revolve around the beach, the pier and the tiki bars rather than a city neighborhood. If you're also weighing the Gulf coast farther south, see Clearwater Beach vs Sarasota as a base.

A lot of trips are a mix. In that case the tiebreaker is usually the beach: it's easier to drive to a museum for one afternoon than to drive to the sand every day.

We left hotel prices out of the table on purpose. Rates at both swing with the season and the event calendar more than with the location, so any single number would mislead you. Compare your actual dates, and add the nightly parking charge before you decide. Our guide to Clearwater Beach hotel parking and resort fees shows how much that can add on the beach side.

What does downtown St. Pete do better?

Museums, by a distance. Four are within a short walk or a free trolley ride of each other:

  • The Dalí Museum (One Dali Blvd.) is open daily 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. and until 8 p.m. on Thursdays, closed Thanksgiving and Christmas. As of October 2026, adult admission is $32; seniors 65 and over, educators, military, fire and police pay $29; students (ages 13 to 17 and college) $22; ages 6 to 12 $12; 5 and under free. After 5 p.m. on Thursdays, adults and seniors pay $16. On-site parking is $10, cards only, first come, first served.
  • Museum of Fine Arts, St. Petersburg (255 Beach Drive NE) is open Tuesday to Sunday 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., with Thursdays running to 8 p.m., and is closed Mondays. Adults are $16 as of October 2026.
  • The James Museum (150 Central Ave.) is open daily 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. and to 8 p.m. on Tuesdays. General admission is $23, or $10 on Tuesdays, as of October 2026.
  • St. Petersburg Museum of History (335 2nd Ave. NE) sits at the land end of the St. Pete Pier.

The St. Pete Pier (800 2nd Ave. NE) is free to walk. It opens 30 minutes before sunrise and closes at 11 p.m. The district covers 26 acres with restaurants, the Tampa Bay Watch Discovery Center, a playground, a splash pad, a fishing deck and Spa Beach. One piece is missing right now: the pier's site lists Janet Echelman's net sculpture "Bending Arc" as temporarily closed.

Food and evenings. Downtown St. Pete has more independent restaurants, spread over Beach Drive, Central Avenue, the EDGE District and Grand Central, so a week of dinners doesn't mean a week of grouper sandwiches. Grand Central and the EDGE are also where to find LGBTQ+ bars and drag shows in St. Pete. Saturdays bring the Saturday Morning Market at Al Lang Stadium, whose main season returned on October 3, 2026.

Getting around without a car. PSTA runs two free downtown circulators: the Downtown Looper, and the Central Avenue Trolley, which runs every 20 minutes between the St. Pete Pier and Grand Central Station. Clearwater Beach has nothing free that compares.

What does Clearwater Beach do better?

The beach, and everything built around it. At Clearwater Beach the Gulf is a walk from almost any hotel, and lifeguards work the main beach at Pier 60 every day from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Pier 60 Park (370 Mandalay Ave.) is open 7 a.m. to 9 p.m. with a playground, restrooms and covered pavilions. The beach itself is open 24 hours.

The sunset routine. Sunsets at Pier 60 is a free festival with artisans and street performers that runs every evening from two hours before to two hours after sunset, weather permitting. Downtown St. Pete faces the wrong way for this.

Beach-day logistics. Chair rentals, rinse showers, boat tours from the Clearwater Beach Marina (25 Causeway Blvd.) and the Clearwater Marine Aquarium (249 Windward Passage) are all on the island or the causeway. From downtown St. Pete, every one of those is a drive.

A beach-town night out. If your idea of nightlife is a drink with sand underfoot and live music near the water, Clearwater Beach is set up for exactly that. The Clearwater Beach bars and nightlife guide sorts the rooftops from the tiki bars.

Aerial view of a curved white high-rise resort with a palm-lined pool deck on the water's edge at Clearwater Beach, with condo towers and a busy street behind it
At Clearwater Beach, most hotels sit on or a block from the water. In downtown St. Pete, the Gulf is a drive away.

What does parking cost in Clearwater Beach vs downtown St. Pete?

On an hourly basis, downtown St. Pete is cheaper. The bigger difference is the daily cap: downtown St. Pete's city garage has one, and Clearwater Beach's city lots don't. All rates below come from the City of Clearwater, the City of St. Petersburg, Pinellas County and the St. Pete Pier, as of October 2026.

WhereRateNotes
Clearwater Beach city lots (Pier 60 lot, 160 S. Gulfview Blvd., and others)$3.50 an hourOpen 6 a.m. to 11 p.m.; no daily cap. The Marina lot has a 2-hour limit at that rate
Clearwater Beach street meters$4 an hour5-hour limit
Sand Key Park (1060 Gulf Blvd., Pinellas County)$6 a day7 a.m. to sunset; credit cards only at pay stations
Downtown St. Pete on-street meters$1 to $1.50 an hourCity rate range; enforcement hours vary, so read the meter
St. Pete Pier on-street meters$2.50 an hour for 3 hours, then $54-hour max, $12.50 total; enforced daily 9 a.m. to 10 p.m.
St. Pete Pier lots (Dolphin and Pelican)Weekdays $2/hr; weekends $2.50/hr for the first 4 hours6-hour max: $15 weekdays, $18 weekends (Fri 5 p.m. to Sun)
SouthCore Garage (entrance 101 1st Ave. S.)$2 an hour$16 daily max; $5 flat on Saturday mornings, October to May
Dalí Museum lot$10Cards only, first come, first served

A full beach day in a Clearwater Beach city lot (say 9 a.m. to sunset) can top $30 at $3.50 an hour, which makes Sand Key Park's $6 day lot look like a bargain. Our Clearwater Beach parking guide has the garage-by-garage strategy.

How far apart are they, and how far is downtown St. Pete from the beach?

Distances and free-flow times below were routed with OpenStreetMap data (the OSRM routing engine) on October 4, 2026. Free-flow means empty roads, so the "plan for" column is our estimate with a buffer for lights, the causeways and bridge traffic. It is not a timed drive.

RouteDistanceFree-flow timePlan for
Pier 60 to St. Pete Pier23.4 mi42 min45-65 min

St. Pete Pier to St. Pete-Clearwater International (PIE)13.2 mi22 min25-40 min

The takeaway: if you base downtown, a Gulf beach day starts with a 25- to 45-minute drive each way. Fort De Soto (3500 Pinellas Bayway S., Tierra Verde; $6 parking, open 7 a.m. to sunset) is the best beach within reach of downtown. Our Fort De Soto guide covers it. Airport access is a wash, so don't let it decide your base; our TPA vs PIE comparison covers which airport to fly into.

Going between them without a car

It works, slowly. PSTA's Suncoast Beach Trolley runs every 30 minutes from Clearwater Beach down Gulf Boulevard to 75th Avenue on St. Pete Beach, and the SunRunner rapid bus runs from St. Pete Beach to downtown St. Pete in about 35 minutes, every 15 minutes until 8 p.m. Each is $2.25 a ride as of October 2026, and the SunRunner is cashless (tap a card or phone). The trolley stops all the way down the beaches, so treat it as half a morning, not a commute. Details are in our Clearwater Beach without a car guide.

Can you do both in one trip?

Yes, and for most visitors that's the right answer. Two simple plans:

  • Clearwater Beach base, one St. Pete day. Drive down in the morning, do the Dalí (buy tickets online ahead), walk or take the free Central Avenue Trolley to the St. Pete Pier, eat downtown, and drive back. If you're flexible, go on a Thursday: the Dalí stays open to 8 p.m. and drops adult tickets to $16 after 5 p.m. The trade-off is missing sunset on the beach that night. Our day trips from Clearwater Beach page has more options.
  • Split stay. On a week-long trip, two or three nights downtown and the rest on the beach removes all the back-and-forth. Do the city first and finish on the sand.

Which should you pick? Verdict by traveler type

  • First trip to Florida's Gulf Coast: Clearwater Beach. The beach is the reason most people come. Spend one day in St. Pete.
  • Families with young kids: Clearwater Beach. Lifeguarded sand, the Pier 60 playground and the aquarium are close together, and nobody has to get back in the car after the beach. More in our Clearwater Beach with kids guide.
  • Art and museum travelers: Downtown St. Pete. The Dalí, the MFA and The James are all downtown, and you can walk between them.
  • Food-focused couples: Downtown St. Pete, with a beach day or two on the side.
  • Beach-bar nightlife and groups: Clearwater Beach.
  • Car-free travelers: Either, if you stay put. Downtown St. Pete's circulators are free. Clearwater Beach's core is walkable, and its trolley costs $2.25.
  • Repeat visitors who've done the beach: Try downtown St. Pete this time and drive out to Fort De Soto or Pass-a-Grille for your Gulf days.
How we researched this

Compiled from the City of Clearwater, the City of St. Petersburg, Pinellas County, PSTA, the St. Pete Pier and the museums' own websites, listed below; prices, hours and parking rates checked October 2026.
