The short answer

Clearwater Beach has no LGBTQ+ bar that we could find, and the Human Rights Campaign doesn't rate Clearwater. The scene is 15 to 40 minutes away: Blur Nightclub in Dunedin (6.6 miles), then Enigma's Friday drag show and the COCKtail pool-bar complex on Central Avenue in St. Petersburg, which scored 100 on HRC's Municipal Equality Index every year from 2021 to 2025. St Pete Pride 2027 dates aren't posted yet.

Key takeaways

  • HRC's Municipal Equality Index rated 20 Florida cities in 2025. Clearwater, Dunedin, Gulfport and the beach towns weren't rated in any year from 2021 to 2025.
  • St. Petersburg and Tampa scored 100 out of 100 in every edition from 2021 to 2025.
  • The closest club in Visit St. Pete-Clearwater's LGBTQ+ guide is Blur, 325 Main St. in Dunedin, about 15 minutes from Pier 60.
  • Weekly drag is in St. Pete: Enigma on Thursday and Friday (plus a drag-hosted talent night Wednesday), COCKtail on weekends plus a twice-monthly drag brunch.
  • Winter Pride St. Pete runs February 14 to 21, 2027. St Pete Pride 2027 is TBA.

Is Clearwater Beach LGBTQ+ friendly? What the measurable signals say

Friendliness is hard to measure, so we stuck to what can be checked. The best-known yardstick is the Human Rights Campaign Foundation's Municipal Equality Index, which scores a city's laws, policies and services. The 2025 edition rated 506 cities. Clearwater isn't one of them.

Florida cities HRC rated that year2119192020

In 2025, 9 of the 20 rated Florida cities scored 100, and Daytona Beach was lowest at 39. The index grades city government, not how a bartender treats you. Still, it's the only regional measure we found that comes out every year.

On the beach itself, Pinellas County's human rights ordinance (Chapter 70 of the county code) applies. The county's Office of Human Rights (400 S. Fort Harrison Ave., Clearwater, 727-464-4880) lists sexual orientation as a protected class in employment, housing and public accommodations. Its pages don't list gender identity.

Florida's restroom law, in plain terms

Florida's Safety in Private Spaces Act (section 553.865, Florida Statutes) makes covered facilities provide restrooms and changing rooms by sex, which it defines by biology at birth, or a unisex option. Covered facilities include schools, jails and "public buildings" owned or leased by state or local government. Entering one designated for the opposite sex and refusing to leave when an employee asks can be charged as trespass. Privately owned hotels, bars and restaurants aren't on the statute's list of covered entities. This is a summary, not legal advice.

Where are the nearest LGBTQ+ bars and drag shows to Clearwater Beach?

The bars below post a recurring schedule on their own sites. The guesthouse, park, beach and town round out the places you're most likely to plan around. Drive times are routing estimates with no traffic. A rideshare takes about as long plus the pickup wait, and evening backups can add a lot more.

How we built this

Venues: we started from Visit St. Pete-Clearwater's LGBTQ+ guide and the Grand Central District LGBTQ directory, and kept only places that publish a recurring schedule on their own sites: enigmastpete.com (weekly lineup graphics), cocktailstpete.com (September 2026 calendar) and blurdunedin.com, read October 4 and 5, 2026. Distances: addresses geocoded with OpenStreetMap Nominatim and routed from Pier 60 with the OSRM car profile, which assumes no traffic; re-run October 5, 2026, with Sunset Beach routed to the Sunset Beach Pavilion at its south end. Scores: HRC's Florida MEI page (rated cities, 2021 to 2025) and the scorecard PDFs it links, retrieved October 5, 2026. Scripts and saved pages are archived for re-runs.

Is there anything LGBTQ+ on Clearwater Beach itself?

Not that we could find. Visit St. Pete-Clearwater's LGBTQ+ guide names no bar, hotel or event on Clearwater Beach. A night on the island means the regular bars, covered in our Clearwater Beach bars and nightlife guide, or the options in things to do at night.

Blur is the easy short hop. Pair it with dinner from our Dunedin restaurant picks, and use the designated rideshare pickup spot Blur's FAQ points to, in front of the Dunedin History Museum next door.

Small waves washing up a wet, flat beach with the sun low over the water and a few gulls flying across a blue sky
Sunset over open water. Treasure Island's Sunset Beach, about 41 minutes south of Pier 60 by car, also faces west over the Gulf.

How do you get from Clearwater Beach to St. Pete and back at night?

Plan the ride home first.

  • Rideshare both ways. Simplest, at about 22 miles each way. Check late-night pricing in the app.
  • Transit out, rideshare back. PSTA's Suncoast Beach Trolley (Route 701) runs from the Clearwater Beach Transit Center down Gulf Boulevard to 75th Avenue on St. Pete Beach in a little over an hour. Switch to the SunRunner on St. Pete Beach (the Transit app shows the nearest stop); PSTA puts that ride at about 35 minutes to downtown, and it stops at Grand Central. Fares are $2.25 a ride, capped at $5 a day when you tap the same card or phone each time. The SunRunner is cashless.
  • Transit both ways, early. The last northbound trolley leaves 75th Avenue at 11:12 p.m. Friday and Saturday (9:42 p.m. other nights) and reaches the Clearwater Beach Transit Center at 12:16 a.m. By our math you'd need to leave downtown by about 10:15 p.m. on a weekend night, or about 8:45 p.m. otherwise. That rules out the late drag shows.

Our car-free guide has full trolley details. If St. Pete nightlife is the main point of the trip, compare Clearwater vs. St. Petersburg as a base before booking.

When is St Pete Pride 2027?

St Pete Pride 2027: dates TBA

As of October 5, 2026, stpetepride.org lists only fall 2026 events and no 2027 Pride weekend dates. We'll update this box when they're posted. Treat any June 2027 date you see elsewhere as a guess.

St Pete Pride describes itself as Florida's largest Pride event. In 2026, the main Pride weekend ran from Friday, June 26 to Sunday, June 28, after a TransPride event on Thursday, June 25. The Parade and Festival was Saturday, June 27, 2 to 9 p.m., at North Straub Park (400 Bayshore Dr. NE), with the parade stepping off at 6 p.m. The TransMarch ran that afternoon at Vinoy Park, and a Street Fair on Central closed the weekend on Sunday, noon to 5 p.m.

From a Clearwater Beach base, transit works for the afternoon festival. Staying for the parade and after-parties means a rideshare home (about 23 miles and 40 minutes with no traffic, which Pride Saturday won't have) or a room in St. Pete. To plan around heat and afternoon storms, check late-June weather in Clearwater.

Across the bay, Tampa Pride's board announced a one-year pause of its festival and parade for 2026 in a letter dated August 1, 2025. Its site shows no 2027 dates.

Are Gulfport and Sunset Beach worth a day trip?

Gulfport, about 42 minutes from Pier 60, is a small town on Boca Ciega Bay that Visit St. Pete-Clearwater calls "super-LGBTQ-friendly." Go on a Tuesday for the year-round Fresh Market (9 a.m. to 2 p.m.), or on the first Friday or third Saturday of the month for the Night Market (5 to 9 p.m.). The Gulfport Merchants Chamber says parking in the village is free.

Sunset Beach, at the southern tip of Treasure Island, is about 41 minutes away. Visit St. Pete-Clearwater says the stretch from just south of 80th Terrace to land's end, between the two jetties, is quieter and "has long been popular with LGBTQ+ beachgoers." Our ranking of beaches near Clearwater Beach compares it with closer options.

Where should LGBTQ+ travelers stay?

We found no Clearwater Beach hotel with a published LGBTQ+ policy or certification, and we won't call one "welcoming" without a source. Two St. Petersburg options are more clear-cut:

  • Mari Jean Hotel, 2349 Central Ave. Adults-only, and part of the same resort as COCKtail and The Wet Spot. Every guest on the reservation must be 21 or older. Its FAQ says allies are welcome too, and Winter Pride calls it St. Pete's only LGBTQ+ hotel. If anyone in your group is under 21, see our guide to hotel check-in ages.
  • Casa del Merman at GayStPete House, 4505 5th Ave. N. A small guesthouse with a heated pool and a clothing-optional pool area, and the venue for St Pete Pride's October benefit.

If you'd rather sleep near the sand and day-trip to St. Pete, see our guide to where to stay on Clearwater Beach.

How we researched this

We read HRC's MEI pages and scorecards, Pinellas County and Florida statute pages, the venues' and event organizers' own sites (including archived St Pete Pride listings), Visit St. Pete-Clearwater's LGBTQ+ guide and PSTA timetables on October 4 and 5, 2026. We didn't visit, call or attend anything. We're an independent guide, and nobody named here paid to be included.

Frequently asked questions

Is Clearwater Beach gay-friendly?

There's no official score: HRC's Municipal Equality Index didn't rate Clearwater from 2021 to 2025. Pinellas County's ordinance lists sexual orientation as a protected class, and neighboring St. Petersburg scored 100 every year. We found no LGBTQ+ bar on the beach itself. The nearest club in Visit St. Pete-Clearwater's LGBTQ+ guide is Blur in Dunedin, about 15 minutes away.

Where can I see a drag show near Clearwater Beach?

In St. Petersburg, about 22 miles away. As of October 2026, Enigma (1110 Central Ave.) has drag Thursday and Friday plus a drag-hosted talent night Wednesday. COCKtail (2355 Central Ave., 21+) has drag on weekends and a drag brunch on the second and fourth Sundays.

When is St Pete Pride 2027?

Not announced as of October 5, 2026. In 2026 the main events ran June 26 to 28, with the Parade and Festival on Saturday, June 27, at North Straub Park. Check stpetepride.org for 2027.

Can I get from Clearwater Beach to St. Pete's gay bars by bus?

Yes, slowly: the Suncoast Beach Trolley to St. Pete Beach (a little over an hour), then the SunRunner downtown (about 35 minutes). The last trolley back leaves 75th Avenue at 11:12 p.m. Friday and Saturday and 9:42 p.m. other nights.
