The short answer

Sleep on the side where you'll spend most of your days. If beach days outnumber Tampa days, base at Clearwater Beach: Busch Gardens is about 31 road miles from Pier 60 (45 to 60 minutes off-peak), and the park's only free shuttle runs from Orlando. If Busch Gardens, ZooTampa and Ybor City fill half the trip, stay in Tampa. With five or more nights and both lists full, split it: Tampa first, beach last.

Key takeaways

  • Mapped road distance from Pier 60: Busch Gardens about 31 miles, ZooTampa and Ybor City about 26, downtown Tampa's Riverwalk about 25, Tampa International Airport (TPA) about 20.
  • From downtown Tampa, Busch Gardens is about 10 miles and Ybor City about 2. Ybor and downtown are linked by the free TECO Line Streetcar.
  • There is no Busch Gardens shuttle from Clearwater Beach. The park's free shuttle (reservation required) picks up only at Orlando-area stops.
  • PSTA's two express buses to downtown Tampa (Routes 100 and 300) run weekdays only and neither starts in Clearwater, so a car or rideshare is the realistic way to Busch from the beach.
  • Busch Gardens general parking starts at $32 plus tax per car (as of October 2026). You pay it either way, so it doesn't favor one base.
  • Staying "in between" in Westshore, Oldsmar or Safety Harbor rarely helps. Each one leaves you 10 to 23 miles from the beach or from Busch, so you still drive every day.

Who should stay in Tampa, and who should stay at the beach?

Count the days. List what you actually plan to do, then mark each day as a beach day or a Tampa day. The longer column is where you sleep. That really is most of the decision, since every day on the "wrong" side means a round trip of roughly 50 road miles.

Stay at Clearwater Beach if the Gulf is the point of the trip and Tampa is one or two outings. You get the walk-out-the-door beach, the Gulf sunsets, and evenings at the Pier 60 sunset festival without a drive home afterward. One Busch Gardens day costs about an hour and a half to two hours of round-trip driving off-peak, a fair price for waking up steps from the sand the rest of the week.

Stay in Tampa if you have multi-day Busch Gardens tickets, a ZooTampa or Florida Aquarium day, a game or concert downtown, and you want the beach once. Downtown Tampa is on the bay, not the Gulf, so the sand is a drive. Once or twice is easy, and the Tampa to Clearwater Beach day-trip guide covers the route and where to park. Cruise passengers face the same choice of base, and the guide to a beach night before or after a Tampa cruise covers that trip.

Split the stay if you have five or more nights and the columns come out close. One morning of packing up costs less time than three or four extra trips across the bay.

Distances are road miles mapped from Pier 60 and from Curtis Hixon Waterfront Park in downtown Tampa. We didn't track nightly hotel rates for this page and won't guess at them. Price the same dates on each hotel's own website, then add parking and any resort fee before you compare. The Clearwater Beach hotel parking and resort fee guide shows what those add-ons look like on the beach side.

How long is the drive from Clearwater Beach to Busch Gardens and the rest of Tampa?

The table below gives mapped road distances from Pier 60 and from downtown Tampa to the places most often paired with a beach trip. Times are off-peak estimates built from those routes, not timed drives. From the beach, the usual way is SR 60: east over the Memorial Causeway, through downtown Clearwater, across the Courtney Campbell Causeway, then I-275 for anything downtown or north.

Rush hour adds real time

Treat those ranges as the best case. Around 8 a.m. or 5 p.m. on a weekday you're crossing the bay with commuters on SR 60 and I-275, so build in an extra 15 to 30 minutes each way. That cushion is a planning rule of thumb, not a measured figure. Weekday middays are usually easier. Check a live traffic map the morning you go, and leave Busch Gardens at close or after dinner rather than in the 5 p.m. rush.

Run the round-trip math before you book. Two Busch Gardens days and an Ybor evening from a beach hotel add up to three round trips, roughly four and a half to six hours behind the wheel at off-peak speeds. The reverse, two beach days from a downtown Tampa hotel, is two round trips and about two and a half to three hours. Put those hours next to your day count and the answer usually picks itself.

Can you get from Clearwater Beach to Busch Gardens without a car?

Not easily. Busch Gardens does run a free shuttle for ticket holders, but it picks up at four Orlando-area locations, requires an advance reservation, and has no stop in Pinellas County. The park's directions page lists no Clearwater option.

Public transit doesn't fill the gap. PSTA's Tampa express buses are Route 100 (St. Pete Pier to Marion Transit Center in downtown Tampa, via Gateway) and Route 300 (Ulmerton Park & Ride to Marion Transit Center, with a stop at TPA). Both run Monday to Friday only, and neither starts in Clearwater. From the beach you'd need a local bus to the express, the express itself, then a Tampa bus to the park. That eats a morning each way and isn't an option on weekends.

That leaves rideshare or a rental car. We haven't priced rideshare fares for this page. They move with demand, so check the app for your date and time, and remember it's two legs, there and back. For a family or group, one day's car rental plus Busch Gardens parking (from $32 plus tax) may come out cheaper, so price both for your date. If you rent, read up on toll roads and rental-car toll fees before you pick up the car. For everything else on the island you can manage without wheels, see Clearwater Beach without a car.

Check the park calendar first

Busch Gardens' hours vary by day (Oct. 4, 2026 was listed as 10 a.m. to 6 p.m.), and Howl-O-Scream runs on select nights from Sept. 11 to Oct. 31, 2026 as a separately ticketed event. Adventure Island, the neighboring water park at 10001 N McKinley Dr, keeps its own calendar. Our guide to Adventure Island and the closer water parks compares it with options nearer the beach. Check your exact dates on both parks' sites before deciding how many Tampa days you need.

A beach base means pools, water views and sunsets from the room. A Tampa base trades them for short drives to the parks.

When does a split stay make sense, and how do you divide the nights?

Five nights is the threshold, and only when both lists are real. On a shorter trip a hotel move eats too much time, so pick the side with more days and drive to the other. Do Tampa first and the beach last. Theme park days are the tiring ones, and you'd rather finish on the sand than on I-275. TPA is about 20 miles from the beach, so ending there costs little on departure day.

TripTampa nightsBeach nightsHow it plays out
5 nights23Land at TPA, Busch Gardens day 1, ZooTampa or the Florida Aquarium plus a Riverwalk and Ybor evening on day 2. Drive to the beach midday on day 3 (check-in times rarely line up with a morning move) and keep days 3 to 5 for the Gulf.
7 nights34Two Busch Gardens days (or Busch plus Adventure Island) and one city day. Then four beach nights with room for a boat trip, a lazy day and a day trip up or down the coast.
7 nights, beach-heavy25One park day and one city day, then a full beach week. Good for couples who want Busch but mostly want to slow down.

If you're unsure the beach can fill three to five nights, our take on how many days to spend at Clearwater Beach walks through what fills each one. Once you've settled on the beach side, the Clearwater Beach neighborhood guide compares South Beach, North Beach, Sand Key and Island Estates. If you're choosing between Sand Key or the main strip, that comparison goes into more detail.

Is it worth staying in between, in Westshore, Oldsmar or Safety Harbor?

Usually not. On a map it looks like a compromise. In road miles it mostly means a drive in both directions.

In-between areaTo Pier 60To Busch GardensWho it suits
Westshore (Tampa), near International Plaza, 2223 N Westshore BlvdAbout 20 miAbout 14 miEarly flights, business travelers, shoppers
Oldsmar (top of Old Tampa Bay)About 15 miAbout 20 miVisitors with family or business in north Pinellas
Safety Harbor (Pinellas, on Old Tampa Bay)About 10 miAbout 23 miPeople who want a small-town base and beach days

Westshore makes the best case of the three. It sits next to TPA and International Plaza, about 20 miles from Pier 60 and 14 from Busch. With a 7 a.m. flight, spending your last night there makes sense. As a week-long base, though, it puts the beach and Busch Gardens each about half an hour away off-peak, every day.

Safety Harbor and Oldsmar are pleasant towns, but you still drive to the Gulf and end up farther from Busch than a Tampa hotel would put you. Downtown Clearwater, on the mainland about 3 miles from the beach, is a different story: it works as a beach base, and our Clearwater vs Clearwater Beach comparison covers the difference.

Which base fits your kind of trip?

  • First-time beach trip, one park day: Clearwater Beach. Drive to Busch Gardens once, leave at park close, and keep the rest of the week on the sand.
  • Theme-park family with multi-day tickets: Tampa, or a 2-and-3 or 3-and-4 split if you have five or more nights. Driving the bay twice a day with tired kids gets old fast.
  • Couples: Clearwater Beach, for the Gulf sunsets and dinners you can walk to. Make Ybor or the Riverwalk an afternoon-into-evening outing.
  • No car: Pick one side and commit. The beach works on foot and trolley, and downtown Tampa works on foot and the free streetcar. Crossing between them without a car means rideshare every time.
  • Sports fans or concert-goers: Tampa for the event nights, beach for the rest. A late game plus a 25-mile drive back across the bay makes for a long night.
  • Long stays and snowbirds: Clearwater Beach or mainland Clearwater, with Tampa as midweek, midday day trips.
  • Early departure from TPA: Whatever your base, consider the last night in Westshore.
How we researched this

Compiled from Busch Gardens Tampa Bay, ZooTampa, The Florida Aquarium, PSTA, the TECO Line Streetcar and the Tampa Riverwalk's own websites, checked October 2026. Distances are road routes mapped on OpenStreetMap data from Pier 60 and downtown Tampa, and drive-time ranges are estimates from those routes, not timed drives. We didn't collect hotel rates or rideshare quotes. We are an independent guide and are not paid by any business named here.

Frequently asked questions

How far is Clearwater Beach from Busch Gardens?

About 31 road miles from Pier 60 to Busch Gardens Tampa Bay at 10165 N McKinley Dr. Allow roughly 45 to 60 minutes off-peak, and more on weekday mornings and late afternoons, when commuters fill SR 60 and I-275.

Is there a shuttle from Clearwater Beach to Busch Gardens?

No. The park's free shuttle picks up only in the Orlando area and requires a reservation. PSTA's express buses to Tampa run weekdays only and don't start in Clearwater. Plan on a rental car or rideshare.

Is it better to stay in Tampa or Clearwater for a beach vacation?

Clearwater Beach. Tampa sits on Tampa Bay and has no Gulf beach downtown, so a Tampa base means about 25 miles each way to the sand. Stay in Tampa only if Tampa attractions take up more of your days than the beach does.

Can I do Busch Gardens as a day trip from Clearwater Beach?

Yes. Leave the beach after the morning rush, budget for general parking (from $32 plus tax as of October 2026), and either stay until close or eat dinner nearby before heading back to skip the 5 p.m. traffic. Hours vary by day, so check the park calendar first.

How should I split 5 nights between Tampa and Clearwater Beach?

Two nights in Tampa, then three at the beach. Do the parks and the city first, move to the beach around midday on day 3, and finish on the sand. TPA is about 20 miles from the beach on departure day.

Which airport should I use for a Tampa and Clearwater Beach split stay?

TPA fits a split stay well, since it's about 7.5 miles from downtown Tampa and about 20 from the beach. If you're only staying at the beach, St. Pete-Clearwater International (PIE) may be worth comparing; our TPA vs PIE guide runs through the trade-offs.
