The short answer

Pick Clearwater Beach if you want the beach, the nightlife and a short ride from Tampa International (about 20 miles). Pick Sarasota, staying on Lido Key or near St. Armands Circle, if you want a calmer beach with a free lot, 130-plus shops and restaurants on the Circle, and The Ringling museums ($30 adult). The two are about 61 miles apart via the Sunshine Skyway ($1.16 SunPass toll each way as of October 2026), roughly 1.5 hours by car.

This page compares Clearwater Beach with the Sarasota city area: Lido Key, St. Armands Circle, downtown and The Ringling. If what you really want to know is which beach has the better sand, that's Siesta Key, and we cover it in Clearwater Beach vs Siesta Key. For the island one county closer, see Anna Maria Island vs Clearwater Beach.

Key takeaways

  • Clearwater Beach is a beach town first, with hotels on the sand, lifeguards 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. daily at Pier 60, the nightly Sunsets at Pier 60 festival, and a walkable bar and restaurant strip.
  • Sarasota gives you a city with culture plus island beaches. Lido Beach (400 Benjamin Franklin Dr.) is lifeguarded and has a free lot. St. Armands Circle is about a mile up the road, with more than 130 stores and restaurants.
  • The Ringling (5401 Bay Shore Rd.) costs $30 for adults (October 2026), $5 for ages 6 to 17, and parking is free. On Mondays the Museum of Art and the Bayfront Gardens are free.
  • Parking (October 2026): Clearwater Beach city lots are $3.50 an hour and street meters $4. In Sarasota, the Lido Pavilion lot is free, Ben Franklin Drive meters are $1 an hour, and the St. Armands Garage gives you the first hour free.
  • The Sunshine Skyway toll is $1.16 with SunPass or $1.62 by plate for a car, charged once in each direction (rates effective April 12, 2026).
  • Sarasota has a free open-air trolley, the 78 Bay Runner, linking downtown, St. Armands and Lido Beach. Clearwater's Jolley Trolley costs $2.25 a ride.

Which is the better base, Clearwater Beach or Sarasota?

Base yourself where you'll spend most of your waking hours. If most days start with a towel and end with drinks near the water, Clearwater Beach is the easier trip. Hotels sit right on the sand, Pier 60 and Mandalay Avenue are a short walk from most of them, and Tampa International is close enough that you can be on the beach the afternoon you land.

Sarasota is the better pick when the beach is one part of the trip rather than all of it. A room on Lido Key or near St. Armands puts you on a quieter Gulf beach, a short walk or free trolley ride from the shops and restaurants on the Circle, and about six miles from The Ringling. Downtown Sarasota adds Marie Selby Botanical Gardens (1534 Mound St.) and a real city restaurant scene. What you give up is volume. Lido has nothing like Clearwater's run of beach bars and late-night crowds, and the closer airport, Sarasota Bradenton International (SRQ, 6000 Rick Piccolo Circle), has fewer flights than Tampa.

If you're split down the middle, book the side that matches most of your days and day-trip to the other. At 1.5 hours each way it's a long day, but a workable one.

Is Lido Beach as good as Clearwater Beach?

For swimming and lying in the sun, yes. It's a real Gulf beach with lifeguards, restrooms and a concession. The difference is what surrounds it. Clearwater Beach is lined with hotels, bars and rental stands, and the stretch around Pier 60 is busy most of the day. Lido Beach is a city park. The Lido Beach Pool & Pavilion at 400 Benjamin Franklin Dr. has a free lot beside the sand, covered seating and the Lido Island Grill concession, which the city says usually opens around 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. depending on crowds. Restrooms are open 7 a.m. to 11 p.m.

Two catches. The 25-meter Lido Beach Pool is closed until further notice for repairs, and the city has given no reopening date as of October 2026. And pets aren't allowed in the park, at the pool or on the public beach, except trained service animals.

Lido Key's two ends are quieter. Sarasota County lists North Lido Beach (50 Benjamin Franklin Dr.) with a trail and birding but no restrooms or lifeguards. Ted Sperling Park at South Lido Beach (2201 Benjamin Franklin Dr.) has restrooms and a playground, but swimming isn't on its list of activities. Need a beach wheelchair? The county lends them free at Lido (ask the lifeguards), and the city lends a powered EcoRover free on weekdays, 9 a.m. to 4 p.m., by reservation.

If the sand itself is the whole point of your trip, Lido isn't the Sarasota beach to weigh against Clearwater. Siesta Beach (948 Beach Rd.), about 10 miles south of St. Armands, is. Our Siesta Key comparison, linked above, covers that one.

St. Armands Circle or Beach Walk: where are dinner and an evening stroll better?

St. Armands Circle fills the role Beach Walk and Mandalay Avenue play in Clearwater, but it's a different kind of place. The city counts more than 130 stores and restaurants within walking distance around a landscaped circle, which grew out of John and Mable Ringling's plan for the key in the 1920s. Think upscale shopping street: people come to browse, eat dinner and get ice cream, not to bar-hop in flip-flops.

Clearwater Beach's strip is louder and more casual. Beach Walk runs along the sand south of Pier 60. Mandalay Avenue, to the north, has the surf shops and bars, and there's live music at bars right on the sand. If evenings out matter to your trip, our Clearwater Beach bars and nightlife guide shows what's within walking distance.

Neither side needs a car for the evening. Lido Beach to St. Armands is about a mile, and the free 78 Bay Runner trolley covers it, along with downtown Sarasota and Ted Sperling Park. It runs 7 a.m. to 10 p.m. Sunday through Thursday and 7 a.m. to 11 p.m. Friday and Saturday. In Clearwater, the Jolley Trolley links the beach, Sand Key and downtown Clearwater for $2.25 a ride, and kids 8 and under ride free.

What does Sarasota have that Clearwater Beach doesn't?

A museum campus. The Ringling, at 5401 Bay Shore Rd. about six miles from St. Armands, is the John and Mable Ringling estate: the Museum of Art, the Circus Museum, the Ca' d'Zan mansion, the Historic Asolo Theater and 66 acres of bayfront gardens. Clearwater has nothing like it. Plan on at least half a day.

The Ringling ticket (as of October 2026)AdultAges 6-17What it covers
Museum Admission$30 (seniors 65+ $27)$5Museum of Art, Circus Museum, Bayfront Gardens; not Ca' d'Zan
Museum Admission + 1st Floor of Ca' d'Zan$45$20The above plus a self-guided visit to the mansion's first floor at set entry times

Free MondayFreeFreeMuseum of Art, Bayfront Gardens, Glass Pavilion; register on arrival, no advance tickets
Bayfront Gardens only$5Free (under 17)Grounds, gardens and Glass Pavilion

Children under 6 get in free. The Ringling is open daily 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., until 8 p.m. on Thursdays (after 5 p.m. only the art museum and gardens are open), and closes on Thanksgiving, Christmas and New Year's Day. Parking is free.

Visiting in early November 2026?

The Ringling says its Historic Circus Galleries close for maintenance November 3 to 9, 2026. Museum Admission drops to $25 November 3 to 8 and to $15 on Monday, November 9. The museum also warns of construction on US 41 near the entrance and suggests side routes such as College Drive or Myrtle Street.

Two more paid stops are worth knowing. Marie Selby Botanical Gardens is open daily 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., and adult admission is $28. Mote Marine Laboratory's Mote Science Education Aquarium (Mote SEA, 225 University Town Center Drive) is a 146,000-square-foot aquarium open 9:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. daily, out near I-75 rather than on the islands. Mote warns that tickets sell quickly, so buy online ahead. Clearwater's equivalent, the Clearwater Marine Aquarium, is about 1.5 miles by road from Pier 60, an easy add-on if you're staying on the beach.

What does parking cost in Sarasota and at Clearwater Beach?

Sarasota wins this one easily. Eight hours at a Clearwater Beach city lot comes to $28; the Lido Pavilion lot is free. Rates as of October 2026:

Sarasota's paid hours are a moving target. The city currently posts "temporary" enforcement hours of 10 a.m. to 8 p.m., Monday through Saturday, for on-street meters, while the St. Armands merchants' association lists 8 a.m. to midnight daily with free Sunday mornings. Read the meter or the app before you leave the car. For the Clearwater side, including free and overnight options, see our guide to free and cheaper parking near Clearwater Beach.

How far is Clearwater Beach from Sarasota, and what's the Skyway toll?

About 61 miles from Pier 60 to Lido Beach. The usual route leaves the beach on the Memorial Causeway, cuts across to I-275 and heads south over the Sunshine Skyway Bridge, then runs through Palmetto and Bradenton on US 41 and crosses to St. Armands and Lido on the John Ringling Causeway. Routing software puts it at about 1.5 hours with clear roads. Plan on more in weekday rush hours and on winter-season weekends.

The Skyway toll. The bridge is all-electronic. For a two-axle car it's $1.16 with SunPass or $1.62 by toll-by-plate. You pay once going south (North Plaza) and once coming back north (South Plaza), so a round trip is $2.32 with a transponder. Those FDOT rates took effect April 12, 2026, and are current as of October 2026. Rental cars bill tolls through the rental company's toll program, which usually adds fees of its own, so check your contract. Our guide to rental car toll charges on the Skyway and other area roads explains how those programs work. You can skip the Skyway by going through Tampa to I-75, but that's a longer drive.

Flying in? Pick the airport that matches your base

Tampa International is about 20 miles from Pier 60 and about 59 miles from Lido Beach. SRQ is about 7.5 miles from Lido. If you're basing in Sarasota and find a reasonable fare into SRQ, take it. If you're staying at Clearwater Beach, TPA is the obvious choice. Our Tampa vs St. Pete-Clearwater airport guide covers the Clearwater side in detail.

Can you day-trip to Sarasota from Clearwater Beach?

Yes, if you pick one main goal. Leave by about 8 a.m. and you'll reach The Ringling around its 10 a.m. opening (Mondays are free for the art museum and gardens). Have lunch at St. Armands Circle (the garage's first hour is free once you enter your plate), then spend late afternoon on Lido Beach, using the free lot or the free Bay Runner, before driving home after sunset. If you'd rather spend the day on sand, our day trips from Clearwater Beach guide has shorter drives.

Which should you choose? Verdict by traveler type

  • First trip to Florida's Gulf Coast, flying into Tampa: Clearwater Beach. It's about 20 miles from the airport, you can stay on the sand, and the evening scene is a walk from your room.
  • Families with young kids: Clearwater Beach, narrowly. Lifeguards at Pier 60, the nightly sunset festival and the Clearwater Marine Aquarium are all close together. Sarasota is good for families who want a calmer beach and a museum day. Remember the Lido pool is closed for now.
  • Couples: Sarasota. Dinner on St. Armands, a morning at The Ringling and a quiet Lido sunset make for a more grown-up trip than the Clearwater strip. For the other side of the argument, see Clearwater Beach for couples.
  • Art, history and garden lovers: Sarasota, easily. The Ringling and Selby Gardens alone are worth a trip.
  • Nightlife and groups of friends: Clearwater Beach. More bars, later nights, everything on foot.
  • Budget beach days: Sarasota on parking (a free lot against $3.50 an hour). Compare room rates for your dates before deciding, since lodging is the bigger cost on either side.
  • Sand-first beach purists: neither city beach. Look at Siesta Key (see the comparison linked at the top of this page) and stay there or on Lido. If you'd rather base in Clearwater, our ranking of the best beaches near Clearwater Beach covers the sand closer to home.

Once you've settled on Clearwater Beach, our where to stay guide breaks the island into areas, and the best time to visit page covers crowds and prices by month.
