Cocoa Beach is closer: about 64 miles from Disney Springs and 49 from Orlando International (MCO), against roughly 94 and 109 miles to Clearwater Beach. Go to Cocoa Beach for a half-day, surf or a rocket launch. Go to Clearwater Beach for calm, shallow water, white sand and a sunset over the Gulf. It's about 40 more minutes each way from Disney on clear roads, but I-4 west has no tolls.
Key takeaways
- From Disney Springs, a Clearwater Beach round trip is about 60 miles longer than a Cocoa Beach one: roughly 80 extra minutes in the car with clear roads, more when I-4 backs up.
- Cocoa Beach is on the Atlantic, so it gets waves, surf and the sunrise. Clearwater Beach faces west on the Gulf: gentler water, and the sun sets into the sea.
- Tolls fall mostly on the Cocoa Beach run. With a transponder, SR 528 costs about $4.24 each way from I-4 and $2.00 from MCO at July 2026 rates. I-4 from Disney to Clearwater Beach is toll-free.
- Parking costs more at Cocoa Beach: $6 an hour in city spaces, capped at $25 a day. Clearwater's city lots are $3.50 an hour (as of October 2026).
- You can watch Cape Canaveral launches from Cocoa Beach. Check the Visit Space Coast schedule and expect dates to slip.
- Cocoa Beach has a leashed dog beach with set hours. Clearwater Beach bans dogs south of Somerset Street and allows them only on a leash on North Beach, which the city says is not a dog beach.
How do Clearwater Beach and Cocoa Beach compare?
The table assumes you're staying around Orlando with one day, or part of one, for the beach. Distances come from map routing, drive times are free-flowing estimates (real traffic adds to them), and fees are the cities' and CFX's published rates.

How long is the drive from Orlando and Disney, and what are the tolls?
To Cocoa Beach it's I-4 east to SR 528 (the Beachline Expressway), then SR 520 east over the causeways into town. That's about 64 miles from Disney Springs and about 49 from MCO, which sits right on SR 528. With clear roads, figure about 1 hour 20 minutes from Disney and an hour from the airport.
To Clearwater Beach it's I-4 west past Lakeland into Tampa, then I-275 and SR 60 over the Courtney Campbell Causeway. That's about 94 miles from Disney Springs, roughly 2 hours when traffic moves, and about 109 miles from MCO. I-4 between Orlando and Tampa is where the time goes. Our Disney to Clearwater Beach day-trip guide covers when to leave and when to head back.
| Route | Toll plazas on the way | Transponder (E-PASS/SunPass) | Pay-by-plate |
|---|---|---|---|
| Disney area to Cocoa Beach (I-4, SR 528, exit SR 520) | Beachline West Main Plaza (Turnpike), Beachline Main Plaza, Dallas Main Plaza | $2.24 + $1.08 + $0.92 = $4.24 | About $6.54 ($2.54 + $2.16 + $1.84) |
| MCO to Cocoa Beach (SR 528 east, exit SR 520) | Beachline Main Plaza, Dallas Main Plaza | $1.08 + $0.92 = $2.00 | $4.00 |
| MCO to Clearwater Beach (SR 528 west to I-4) | Beachline West Main Plaza (Turnpike) | $2.24 | $2.54 (CFX's chart shows only its $1.38 share of this plaza) |
| Disney area to Clearwater Beach (I-4, I-275, SR 60) | None | $0 | $0 |
These are one-way, two-axle rates from the Central Florida Expressway Authority chart and the Florida's Turnpike chart, both effective July 1, 2026; the Beachline West and Dallas plazas add a Turnpike or FDOT share to the CFX figure. You pass the same plazas coming back, so double them. Rental companies usually bill tolls back to you and may add their own fee; check your contract before you go. Our guide to tolls and rental-car toll fees from MCO explains how those programs work.
Go to Cocoa Beach. It's about an hour from the terminal on one expressway, with $2.00 in tolls by transponder. Clearwater Beach is more than twice as far, so save it for a planned day (or try flying into Tampa or St. Pete instead). Our Orlando to Clearwater Beach route guide compares the options.
Which has calmer water, the Gulf or the Atlantic?
Usually the Gulf. Clearwater Beach faces west into the Gulf of Mexico, and most days the water comes in as small waves over a long, shallow slope, which is why families with toddlers like it. Cocoa Beach faces the open Atlantic and its steady swell. The city describes itself as home to "a long surfing tradition" and tells swimmers and surfers to check ocean conditions and warning flags before going in. Waves are more fun on a boogie board and also bring more rip-current risk. On either coast, swim near a lifeguard.
Neither coast is the same every day. A passing front can chop up the Gulf, and the Atlantic sometimes goes nearly flat in summer. Before you drive, check the National Weather Service forecast from Melbourne for Cocoa Beach or Tampa Bay for Clearwater.
Water temperatures are close, and in winter the Atlantic side runs warmer. NOAA has water-temperature sensors at Clearwater Beach and at Trident Pier in Port Canaveral, about 3 miles north of the Cocoa Beach Pier. These are 2024 monthly averages, the most recent full year both stations recorded:
| Month (2024) | Clearwater Beach (NOAA CWBF1) | Port Canaveral, Trident Pier (NOAA TRDF1) | Warmer |
|---|---|---|---|
| January | 62°F | 71°F | Atlantic |
| February | 64°F | 69°F | Atlantic |
| March | 73°F | 75°F | About even |
| April | 76°F | 79°F | Atlantic |
| July | 90°F | 89°F | About even |
| October | 80°F | 85°F | Atlantic |
| December | 71°F | 73°F | About even |
That's one year from fixed sensors, not a forecast, and one cold front can move either number several degrees in a week. Read it as a pattern: the shallow Gulf off Clearwater cools faster in winter (see what a Clearwater winter beach day is like), and by summer both sides are bath-warm. Our Clearwater Beach water temperature guide has the month-by-month detail for the Gulf side.
Sunset at Clearwater or sunrise and rocket launches at Cocoa?
For a lot of people this settles it. Clearwater Beach gets the sunset over the Gulf, and the sand around Pier 60 (160 S. Gulfview Blvd.) is the classic spot, with the free nightly Sunsets at Pier 60 festival next to it. Cocoa Beach gets the sunrise out of the Atlantic; its sunset happens behind you, over land.
| Date | Clearwater Beach sunset | Cocoa Beach sunrise |
|---|---|---|
| October 15, 2026 | 7:02 p.m. | 7:23 a.m. |
| December 21, 2026 | 5:41 p.m. | 7:10 a.m. |
| January 15, 2027 | 5:58 p.m. | 7:16 a.m. |
| March 15, 2027 | 7:40 p.m. | 7:32 a.m. |
| June 21, 2026 | 8:31 p.m. | 6:26 a.m. |
Times are U.S. Naval Observatory figures in Eastern time. For an October sunset at Clearwater, you'd leave the beach around 7:15 p.m. and reach Disney after 9. A Cocoa sunrise means pulling out of Disney around 5:45 a.m. For other dates, see our Clearwater Beach sunset time page.
Rocket launches are Cocoa Beach's trump card. Visit Space Coast says you can see them "from almost anywhere on the Space Coast," and Cocoa Beach is roughly 13 to 17 miles south of the main Cape Canaveral and Kennedy pads as the crow flies. As of October 4, 2026, the schedule listed a Falcon 9 Dragon cargo launch (CRS SpX-35) for October 13 at 6:33 a.m., with more in late October, November and December. Dates and times slip all the time, sometimes minutes before liftoff. Check the Visit Space Coast launch schedule the night before and again before you leave. Staying on the Gulf side instead? Here is what a Cape launch looks like from Clearwater Beach.
Scrubs are routine. If a launch is the main draw, Cocoa Beach still makes sense because you get a beach day either way. Just don't build a non-refundable dinner around the launch time.
What does parking cost at each beach?
Clearwater Beach: most city lots charge $3.50 an hour with no time limit, 6 a.m. to 11 p.m. On-street meters are $4 an hour with a 5-hour limit. Pay at the pay-by-plate kiosks, in the ParkMobile app or by text. The Pier 60 lot (160 S. Gulfview Blvd.) puts you closest to the pier. The biggest city lot, at the Municipal Marina (25 Causeway Blvd.), has a 2-hour limit unless a marina boat-tour operator or restaurant gives you an extension code. The North Beach Parking Plaza at 490 Poinsettia Ave. and several other garages are private. Six hours in a city lot comes to $21. See our Clearwater Beach parking guide for lot-by-lot strategy.
Cocoa Beach: city parking is $6 an hour with a 1-hour minimum, or $25 for the full day. It's all paid through the Passport Parking app, which adds a $0.35 convenience fee, and enforcement runs 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. every day. The spaces are at Alan Shepard Park (216 E. Cocoa Beach Causeway), Sidney Fischer Park (2200 N. Atlantic Ave.), a downtown garage at 25 S. Orlando Ave. and 40 street-end beach accesses east of A1A. Anything past four hours hits the $25 cap. Coming back often? A non-resident permit is $75 for the calendar year, though it isn't valid at Shepard Park or the 22 N. Atlantic Ave. lot.
Put tolls and parking together and the closer beach costs more in fees. From Disney with a transponder, Cocoa Beach is about $8.48 in round-trip tolls plus $25 to park. Clearwater Beach is $0 in tolls and about $21 to park. The extra 60 miles of gas to Clearwater roughly evens it out.
Is Clearwater Beach worth the extra drive from Orlando?
Yes, if you have a full day and want calm water and a sunset. No, if you have half a day or less. The day-trip math from Disney Springs, using free-flowing drive estimates:
| Day-trip math from Disney Springs | Clearwater Beach | Cocoa Beach |
|---|---|---|
| Round-trip miles | About 188 | About 128 |
| Round-trip driving, no traffic | About 4 hours | About 2 hours 45 minutes |
| Tolls, round trip (transponder) | $0 | About $8.48 |
| Six hours of city parking | $21 | $25 (daily cap) |
| Beach time in a 10-hour outing | About 6 hours | About 7 hours |
| Best-fit day | Late start, stay for sunset | Early start, sunrise or launch, back by mid-afternoon |
On a full day, the extra driving buys you a different kind of beach, and if anyone in your group won't swim in surf, that's the answer. Squeezing the beach in between park days or around a flight is another story: Cocoa Beach gives you more sand time per hour in the car. The two are about 154 road miles apart, so don't try both in one day.
Which beach should you pick? Verdict by traveler type
- Families with toddlers or nervous swimmers: Clearwater Beach. The gentler Gulf water and long shallow wading zone are worth the extra drive. Plan shade and gear with our guide to Clearwater Beach with a toddler.
- Half-day or arrival-day beach trip from MCO: Cocoa Beach, about an hour away on one expressway.
- Surfers and boogie boarders: Cocoa Beach. The Atlantic brings the waves, and the 800-foot Westgate Cocoa Beach Pier is the landmark to aim for.
- Space fans: Cocoa Beach, timed to a launch on the official schedule, with a backup plan if it scrubs.
- Couples and sunset chasers: Clearwater Beach. Stay for the Pier 60 sunset and have dinner before the drive back.
- Traveling with a dog: Cocoa Beach. The city's dog beach runs from 4th Street South to the north side of Robert P. Murkshe Memorial Park. Leashes can be no longer than 10 feet, and dogs are allowed 6 to 10 a.m. and 4 to 7 p.m. in standard time, or 6 to 10 a.m. and 5 to 9 p.m. in daylight saving time. Clearwater Beach bans pets from its main bathing beach south of Somerset Street and allows leashed dogs only on North Beach; our dog-friendly Clearwater guide covers the nearby options.
- Staying several nights, not just visiting: Clearwater Beach. The walkable beach strip, the Gulf sunsets and the easy Tampa airport access make it the better base.

Frequently asked questions
Which is closer to Orlando, Clearwater Beach or Cocoa Beach?
Cocoa Beach, by a lot: about 49 miles from Orlando International Airport and 64 from Disney Springs. Clearwater Beach is roughly 109 miles from the airport and 94 from Disney Springs.
Is the water calmer at Clearwater Beach than Cocoa Beach?
Usually. Clearwater Beach sits on the Gulf of Mexico, where the water is typically gentle over a long, shallow slope. Cocoa Beach faces the open Atlantic and gets regular waves, which is why it's a surf town. Either coast can surprise you, so check the flags and the National Weather Service surf forecast that day.
Are there tolls between Orlando and Clearwater Beach?
Not on the standard route from the Disney area (I-4 west, then I-275 and SR 60). From MCO, the usual SR 528 west to I-4 route passes one Turnpike plaza: $2.24 with a transponder or $2.54 by plate (July 2026 rates). By comparison, the Cocoa Beach run on SR 528 is about $4.24 each way from I-4 with a transponder.
Can you see a rocket launch from Clearwater Beach?
Don't count on it. Clearwater Beach is about 138 miles from Cocoa Beach in a straight line, on the other side of the state. If seeing a launch matters, go to the Space Coast; Visit Space Coast says launches are visible from almost anywhere there and keeps a live schedule.
Can you do Clearwater Beach and Cocoa Beach in the same day?
Not well. They're about 154 road miles apart, roughly three hours of driving on top of the trip from Orlando. Pick one per day: Cocoa Beach for a morning, sunrise or launch, and Clearwater Beach for a long day that ends at sunset.
Which beach is cheaper to park at?
Clearwater Beach, for most day trips. City lots there are $3.50 an hour (as of October 2026), while Cocoa Beach charges $6 an hour with a $25 daily cap, plus a $0.35 app fee. The gap is widest on short visits; on a long day at Cocoa, the cap narrows it. To spend less at Clearwater, see our free parking options near Clearwater Beach.
