Walt Disney World is 105 miles east of Clearwater Beach. About 1 hour 45 minutes of driving in reasonable traffic. For families who want a day away from the parks and into the Gulf, Clearwater Beach is the #1 recommended beach — closer, prettier, and more family-friendly than most alternatives.
Route Overview
- Leave Walt Disney World / Kissimmee area westbound on I-4
- Continue west on I-4 through Lakeland and into Tampa (~1h 10m)
- Just east of downtown Tampa, exit onto I-275 South
- Cross over the Howard Frankland Bridge toward St. Petersburg briefly, then take FL-60 W / Gulf to Bay Blvd
- FL-60 runs straight west through Clearwater to the Memorial Causeway
- Cross the causeway — you're on Clearwater Beach
Alternate route: stay on I-4 through Tampa, take Veterans Expressway (589) north briefly, then Courtney Campbell Causeway (FL-60) over Old Tampa Bay. Slightly scenic, similar total time.
How Long Does It Really Take?
- Light traffic (early morning): 1h 30m
- Normal traffic: 1h 45m – 2h
- Rush hour / Friday afternoon: 2h 30m possible, especially around Tampa
- Holiday weekends: add 30–60 min
Best time to leave: 7 AM. You'll arrive by 9 AM, beat the beach crowds, and have a full day.
Is It Worth a Day Trip?
Yes — with caveats. A one-day Disney-to-Clearwater beach trip works well if:
- You leave Disney by 7 AM (back at Disney by 8 PM)
- Your Disney park day is planned around the trip (don't try to do both)
- Everyone is OK with 4 hours of driving in one day
It works less well if:
- You're squeezing it in around morning or evening park time
- Kids under 4 who hate long car rides
- You want to see Caladesi Island (need 6+ hours on the beach)
Recommended: Overnight Instead
If your trip has flexibility, consider staying overnight at Clearwater Beach. Book a hotel for one or two nights in the middle of your Disney trip:
- Avoid the driving fatigue
- See the Pier 60 Sunset Festival
- Eat at Frenchy's without rushing
- Maybe squeeze in a dolphin tour
- Then drive back to Disney rested
One-night hotel stays in the off-season run $150–$300. Worth it vs. a single exhausted day trip.
What to Do on the Beach Day
Short Day Plan (arrive 9 AM, leave 4 PM)
- 9:00 — Park at North Beach Parking Plaza
- 9:30 — Beach time (rent chairs, umbrella)
- 12:00 — Lunch at Frenchy's Rockaway
- 1:30 — Dolphin tour (2 hours) or more beach
- 3:30 — Walk Beach Walk, ice cream at Camille's
- 4:00 — Head back to Disney
Parking
Arrive by 10 AM on weekends for the garages. Full parking guide here.
Beach Gear on Arrival
Don't bother packing beach gear from home — rentals are cheap and convenient on the beach. Umbrella + 2 chairs: $25–$35 for the day from Beach Walk vendors.
What About Driving Back to Disney at Night?
Memorial Causeway is scenic at sunset. I-4 east is an easy evening drive, generally clear after 6 PM (rush hour is westbound). Stay for the sunset, grab dinner at Frenchy's, and be back at Disney by 9:30 PM.
The Disney-to-Clearwater day trip is a classic. It works. But if you're paying Disney money for a vacation, spring for a one-night Clearwater Beach hotel. Getting the full sunset festival + a relaxed evening turns a rushed trip into a highlight.Back to Travel
