King mackerel ("kingfish") are the Gulf Coast's most popular nearshore gamefish. They average 10–20 pounds with trophies ("smokers") regularly exceeding 40. They follow baitfish migrations up and down the coast, meaning Clearwater Beach gets two seasonal runs per year — each producing incredible action for anglers who know when to go.

Where to Find Them

The Classic Technique: Slow Trolling Live Bait

  1. Catch or buy live blue runners, threadfin herring, or Spanish sardines
  2. Rig with a stinger rig — main hook through the nose, treble trailing
  3. Troll at 1.5–3 knots behind the boat
  4. Set lines at varying distances (40' / 60' / 100')
  5. Kingfish hit at full speed and peel line — let them run before setting hard

Other Productive Techniques

Tournament Fishing

Clearwater Beach hosts several king mackerel tournaments each year. The Old Salt Kingfish Classic (Madeira Beach) and smaller local events bring serious kingfish anglers to the Gulf. Purses for bigger events run $50,000+ for the winning fish.

Eating Kingfish

Kings are oily like their Spanish cousins. Bleed and ice them immediately. Large kings ("smokers") are best smoked — hence the nickname. Smaller 24–28" fish grill well fresh. The belly strips are particularly prized by locals.

If you see frigatebirds working an area 2–5 miles off the beach in October, you've found kingfish. Drop a live bait under them. What happens next is the reason people fish the Gulf.
