King mackerel ("kingfish") are the Gulf Coast's most popular nearshore gamefish. They average 10–20 pounds with trophies ("smokers") regularly exceeding 40. They follow baitfish migrations up and down the coast, meaning Clearwater Beach gets two seasonal runs per year — each producing incredible action for anglers who know when to go.
When to Catch Kingfish
- Spring run: April – May. Fish move north following bait.
- Fall run: October – November. Peak season. Largest fish of the year.
- Summer: Resident fish scattered 10–30 miles out
- Winter: Kings move south to warmer water — poor local fishing
Size & Bag Limits (Florida Gulf)
- Minimum size: 24" fork length
- Bag limit: 2 per angler per day
- License: Florida saltwater fishing license required
Where to Find Them
- Nearshore bait pods (1–10 miles offshore) — where the food is, the kings are
- The "V" around Clearwater Pass — a classic staging area on falling tide
- Offshore hump and reef structures (10–30 miles) during summer
- Bird activity — frigatebirds and gulls diving over bait reveal kingfish below
The Classic Technique: Slow Trolling Live Bait
- Catch or buy live blue runners, threadfin herring, or Spanish sardines
- Rig with a stinger rig — main hook through the nose, treble trailing
- Troll at 1.5–3 knots behind the boat
- Set lines at varying distances (40' / 60' / 100')
- Kingfish hit at full speed and peel line — let them run before setting hard
Tackle
- Rod: 7' medium-heavy trolling rod, 20–30 lb class
- Reel: 6500–9500 size conventional with 300+ yards of 30 lb mono or 50 lb braid
- Main line: 30 lb mono or 50 lb braid
- Wire leader: required — #5 or #7 single-strand wire, 30–40"
- Stinger rig: 3/0 VMC hook with a #4 treble stinger
Other Productive Techniques
- Slow-trolled dead bait: ribbonfish or dead cigar minnows on duster rigs
- Diving plugs: Rapala X-Rap Magnum 30, pulled 50 feet behind the boat
- Chum + live pitch bait: chum a slick, pitch live baits on spinning gear
- Kite fishing: for the dedicated — kites hold baits on the surface producing explosive strikes
Tournament Fishing
Clearwater Beach hosts several king mackerel tournaments each year. The Old Salt Kingfish Classic (Madeira Beach) and smaller local events bring serious kingfish anglers to the Gulf. Purses for bigger events run $50,000+ for the winning fish.
Eating Kingfish
Kings are oily like their Spanish cousins. Bleed and ice them immediately. Large kings ("smokers") are best smoked — hence the nickname. Smaller 24–28" fish grill well fresh. The belly strips are particularly prized by locals.
If you see frigatebirds working an area 2–5 miles off the beach in October, you've found kingfish. Drop a live bait under them. What happens next is the reason people fish the Gulf.Back to Fishing
