American red snapper is arguably the most prized reef fish in the Gulf of Mexico. They live in deeper water than grouper — typically 100–200 feet — and they hit hard, fight well, and eat phenomenally. They're also heavily regulated, with short seasons and tight bag limits that vary each year.
Season Dates (2026)
Florida Gulf red snapper seasons split into state waters (9 miles out) and federal waters (9–200 miles). Clearwater Beach charters fish almost entirely in federal waters because that's where the fish live.
- Federal waters recreational season: typically June 1 – late July (dates shift each year based on stock assessment)
- Florida state waters: usually slightly longer, includes weekends in fall
- For-hire season (charter boats): the federal season, same dates
- Outside of season: strict catch-and-release only
Check MyFWC.com and NOAA Fisheries before your trip — dates change.
Size & Bag Limits
- Minimum size: 16" total length
- Bag limit: 2 per angler per day
- Descending device required for released fish — red snapper suffer barotrauma from depth
- License required (see license guide)
Where to Catch Them
Red snapper live on hard bottom and structure at 100–200 feet offshore. The productive fishing grounds are:
- 20–30 miles offshore: smaller fish 16–20"
- 30–50 miles offshore: classic snapper grounds, 5–10 pound fish common
- 50+ miles offshore: trophy fish, 15+ pounds possible, full-day trips required
No shore or pier access to red snapper — they're a pure offshore species.
Tackle
- Rod: 6.5' heavy conventional, 50–80 lb class
- Reel: 4/0–6/0 conventional with 30+ lb drag
- Line: 80 lb braid, 60–80 lb fluorocarbon leader
- Hooks: 8/0–10/0 circle (required by law)
- Weight: 8–16 oz
Bait
- Cut squid — classic, always works
- Live pinfish — excellent for bigger snapper
- Cigar minnows / threadfin herring — premium live bait
- Slow-pitch jigs — 200–400 gram, increasingly popular
- Butterfly jigs — fast-drop, aggressive retrieves
Techniques
- Drop to bottom, reel up 2–3 cranks
- Snapper hit with a distinctive "thud" — don't set, let the circle hook work
- Steady winding, no pumping — keep constant pressure
- Once off the bottom, they can't wrap you
- Use a descending device on any fish you can't keep
Booking a Red Snapper Trip
Book 2–6 months in advance for season. Federal-water red snapper charters from Clearwater Beach are:
- Full-day: $1,200–$1,800 for 4 anglers, 8–10 hours
- Party boat during season: $140–$180 per person
- Expect to leave the dock before 6 AM
If you can fit a Clearwater Beach trip into the red snapper season window, this is the fishing trip to book. Short season + high demand = reserve early. If you miss the season, book a grouper trip instead — same boat, same reefs, same captain.Back to Fishing
