Clearwater Beach is the most-visited Gulf Coast beach day trip for Orlando tourists — by a wide margin. It's closer than Fort Myers, prettier than Daytona (which is on the Atlantic), and dramatically more walkable than most Florida beach towns. Here's how to make the trip.
Distance & Drive Time
- Miles: 105 from downtown Orlando; 110 from Disney/Kissimmee area
- Drive time (light traffic): 1h 30m
- Drive time (normal): 1h 45m – 2h
- Drive time (rush hour): 2h 30m
The Route
- Take I-4 West out of Orlando
- Stay on I-4 for ~70 miles through Lakeland and into Tampa
- Just before downtown Tampa, exit onto I-275 South
- Exit I-275 onto FL-60 West / Gulf to Bay Blvd
- FL-60 runs all the way to Clearwater Beach — cross Memorial Causeway, you're there
Best Time to Leave
- Best: 7–8 AM — arrives by 9:30, beats beach traffic, parking available
- OK: 9–10 AM — arrives midday, parking tighter
- Avoid: leaving after 11 AM on weekends — you'll hit traffic both ways and parking
From Orlando International Airport (MCO)
If you're flying into Orlando and headed straight to Clearwater Beach:
- Rental car: most convenient. Drive time identical to downtown Orlando.
- Uber/Lyft: $150–$220 for the trip. Not practical for long stays, OK for transfer.
- Shuttle service: Mears, Sunshine Shuttle offer shared rides for ~$65–$90/person.
Note: Tampa International Airport (TPA) is only 22 miles from Clearwater Beach — if you're specifically visiting the beach and haven't booked flights, TPA saves you 80+ miles of driving. See our transport guide.
Day Trip vs Overnight
Day Trip (7 AM – 8 PM)
Doable but intense. You get 6–7 hours at the beach plus 3–4 hours of driving.
- Morning beach time
- Lunch at Frenchy's
- Dolphin tour or more beach
- Dinner at a beach-view restaurant
- Drive back in the evening
Overnight (strongly recommended)
With one or two nights on the beach, you can actually enjoy it.
- Arrive morning, full beach day
- Pier 60 Sunset Festival
- Relaxed dinner
- Swim or sunrise walk in the morning
- Maybe Caladesi Island day 2
Will I Hit Traffic?
Tampa traffic is the main concern. I-4 through Tampa (around Exit 7 / Downtown) can jam during rush hour (7–9 AM eastbound, 4–7 PM westbound). Avoid leaving Orlando westbound before 7 AM or after 3 PM on weekdays.
Things to Consider Bringing
- Pre-packed beach snacks (cheaper than buying there)
- Change of clothes for the ride back
- Plastic bag for wet swimsuits
- Water bottles (refill at lifeguard stations)
- Sunscreen applied before you leave (saves 15 min at the beach)
The Orlando-to-Clearwater day trip is a rite of passage for anyone visiting Central Florida. But if you can swing one night on the beach, do it. You'll be so glad you didn't drive back at 9 PM exhausted after a full day in the sun.Back to Travel
