The short answer

For wild manatees, drive about 41 miles to Tampa Electric's free Manatee Viewing Center in Apollo Beach, open November 1 to April 15. On a cold day nothing closer is as reliable. To swim with them, go to Crystal River (about 75 miles) between November 15 and March 31. Closest of all is Clearwater Marine Aquarium, 1.6 miles from Pier 60, which has two rescued manatees on view as of October 2026 ($41.95 adults).

Key takeaways

  • Wild manatees crowd into warm water when the Gulf drops below about 68°F. NOAA's averages for Clearwater Beach sit under that from December through February.
  • The Manatee Viewing Center (6990 Dickman Rd., Apollo Beach) is free, parking included, 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. daily from November 1 to April 15. It's closed until the 2026-27 season opens November 1.
  • FWC calls Kings Bay in Crystal River "the only area in Florida where swimmers are monitored around manatees."
  • The rule everywhere in Florida: look, but don't touch, chase, feed or give water. Report a hurt or stranded manatee to FWC at 888-404-3922.

Where can you see manatees near Clearwater Beach?

Six places are realistic. Distances are road miles from Pier 60 (OpenStreetMap routing, October 2026). Drive times assume light traffic, so pad them on US-19 and the causeways in season.

PlaceFrom Pier 60ManateesWhenCost (Oct 2026)

Can you see manatees without leaving Clearwater Beach?

Yes, at Clearwater Marine Aquarium (249 Windward Passage, on Island Estates). Its Dr. James "Buddy" Powell Manatee Rehabilitation Center handles second-stage care: manatees that no longer need a hospital but aren't ready to go back to the wild. You watch them through underwater windows. Right now that's two males, Axle and Gilbert, who came over from ZooTampa on September 23, 2026 and went on view September 30. The aquarium expects to release them in early 2027.

Don't treat it as a sure thing. The tanks sit empty between patients (the previous pair was released in February 2026, and nothing replaced them until September), viewing can close while new arrivals settle in, and a manatee in care isn't always in sight. Hurricane Helene put more than four feet of water through the aquarium in 2024, and the manatee center stayed shut for over a year before reopening in November 2025. Check the aquarium's manatee page the week you go. Hours are 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., and admission covers the manatee center: $41.95 adults, $32.95 ages 3 to 11, $39.95 seniors 65+ (as of October 2026).

Will you see wild manatees at Clearwater Beach itself?

Sometimes, but don't plan around it. Outside winter, FWC says manatees are "widely dispersed" through Florida's waterways, so one might surface in Clearwater Harbor or next to your kayak between spring and fall. If you rent a boat, our pontoon guide covers the manatee zones and no-wake rules for rental boats. Or you might see nothing all week. In winter they leave the open Gulf. NOAA's average water temperature at Clearwater Beach is 65.2°F in December, 61.5°F in January and 63.5°F in February, and at that point the animals have moved to the warm-water sites below. For the animals you're likelier to see from the sand, check our month-by-month wildlife guide.

Never hose or feed a manatee from a dock

FWC: "Look, but don't touch manatees. Also, don't feed manatees or give them water." Manatees that get used to people can lose their fear of boats. If you see one that's hurt, tangled or stranded, call 888-404-3922.

Is the Manatee Viewing Center in Apollo Beach worth the drive?

In winter, yes. Nothing else from Clearwater Beach gets you this many wild manatees for free. The center overlooks the warm-water discharge canal of Tampa Electric's Big Bend Power Station, a state and federally designated manatee sanctuary, and FWC says visitors can see "hundreds of manatees" there.

  • Season and hours: November 1 to April 15, 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. daily, with trails closing at 4 p.m. Closed Thanksgiving, Christmas Day and Easter, and from 3 p.m. on Christmas Eve. It's closed now and reopens November 1, 2026.
  • Cost: Admission and parking are free. Tampa Electric encourages groups to reserve and lists no reservation requirement for individuals.
  • What's there: a 900-foot accessible boardwalk (the Tidal Walk), a 50-foot observation tower, a ray touch tank and an education building. No pets are allowed, but service animals are welcome.

Numbers swing with the weather. Tampa Electric says you're likely to see many manatees once the water drops below 68°F, and a mild week can mean a thin crowd. Its two webcams run through April 15, so look before you drive. At a little over an hour each way, it's a half-day trip.

How do you see manatees at Crystal River?

This is the big one. The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service says more than 600 manatees migrate to Kings Bay each winter, and the Crystal River National Wildlife Refuge's manatee season runs November 15 to March 31. Figure about two hours each way, so it's a full day; our day trips from Clearwater Beach guide lays out the drive. You have two ways to see them.

  • From the boardwalk: The City of Crystal River sells land access at the Three Sisters Springs Center (917 Three Sisters Springs Trail), and the shuttle to the springs is included. The center is open 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., with last tickets at 3:30 p.m. Winter tickets (November 15 to March 31) are $20 adults, $17.50 seniors 55+ and $7.50 ages 6 to 15; under 6 is free. Summer adults pay $12.50 (as of October 2026). There's no swimming from the boardwalk, and the city says parts of it are under construction and closed for now.
  • In the water: The only way in is by boat or paddle craft from a public launch such as Hunter Springs Park (104 NE 1st Ave.). Paddle craft are allowed inside Three Sisters Springs only from April 1 to November 14. The refuge doesn't run tours. It gives special use permits to private operators and publishes the list on its website.

The city's advice: come during cold fronts and at high tide. Crystal River and Homosassa are also where Clearwater visitors go for summer scallop season in the same waters.

What about Homosassa Springs Wildlife State Park?

It's the surest bet in summer. Homosassa Springs Wildlife State Park (officially Ellie Schiller Homosassa Springs Wildlife State Park, 4150 S. Suncoast Blvd., Homosassa) keeps non-releasable manatees, animals too badly hurt or sick to survive in the wild, and FWC says wild manatees can also reach the spring's headwaters in winter. The Fish Bowl, an underwater observatory floating in the main spring, puts you at eye level with them.

Manatee programs run daily at 11 a.m. and 1 p.m.: a 15 to 20 minute talk followed by a feeding, free with admission. The park is open 9 a.m. to 5:30 p.m., and ticket counters close at 4:45 p.m. Admission is $13 for ages 13 and up and $5 for ages 6 to 12 (as of October 2026). Check the park's alerts first. Its site says the shuttle boat has been out of service since February 4, 2026 because of low water. Three Sisters Springs is about 7 road miles north, so the two fit into one long winter day.

What is ZooTampa's manatee hospital like?

ZooTampa at Lowry Park (1101 W. Sligh Ave., Tampa) runs the David A. Straz, Jr. Manatee Critical Care Center, which the zoo calls the largest nonprofit manatee critical care center in the world. It says it has rescued more than 630 manatees over 30-plus years. Visitors see the patients through underwater windows in Manatee Rescue, part of the zoo's new Florida Waters area. Same-day tickets are $53.95 adults and $43.95 ages 3 to 11, and buying ahead online saves $3 a person (as of October 2026). Go if you want a full zoo day. If manatees are the only reason, the aquarium is closer and cheaper, as long as it has patients.

Is there anywhere closer to see wild manatees in winter?

Try Spring Bayou in Tarpon Springs, about 17 miles from Pier 60, next to Craig Park and Coburn Park in the historic district. FWC lists it as a spot where manatees visit the freshwater bayou from November through May, and warns that parking is limited. Sightings depend on the cold, same as Apollo Beach. Pair it with the sponge docks on a Tarpon Springs day trip.

Can you swim with manatees near Clearwater, and what are the rules?

Not around Clearwater, not in any way you can plan. FWC calls Kings Bay in Crystal River the only area in Florida where swimmers are monitored around manatees, and that's where the permitted swim tours run. The refuge asks for "passive observation," which it defines as "not initiating contact with manatees and calmly observing from a distance and at the surface."

Federal rules in all waters of Kings Bay, Three Sisters Springs included, prohibit:

  • chasing a manatee
  • touching or disturbing a resting or feeding manatee
  • diving onto, cornering or surrounding a manatee
  • riding, holding, poking or standing on a manatee
  • separating a mother and calf
  • giving a manatee anything to eat or drink

From November 15 to March 31, Kings Bay's seven warm-water sanctuaries are closed to all activity. When the Gulf falls below 62.2°F, the Fish and Wildlife Service can close Three Sisters Springs to people in the water; the boardwalk isn't affected. Statewide, manatees are covered by the Florida Manatee Sanctuary Act and the federal Marine Mammal Protection Act and Endangered Species Act, and FWC defines harassment as "any activity that alters the animal's natural behavior." The rules for the beach itself are on our Clearwater Beach rules page. Dolphins are covered by the same Marine Mammal Protection Act; see the federal rules on swimming with wild dolphins.

Which manatee trip should you pick?

  • Families on a beach week: Clearwater Marine Aquarium, once you've confirmed it has manatee patients. It's five minutes away, and the dolphins and sea turtles make the ticket worth it either way.
  • Winter visitors who want wild manatees for free: the Manatee Viewing Center in Apollo Beach.
  • Anyone who wants to be in the water with them: Crystal River, November 15 to March 31, with a refuge-permitted operator.
  • Summer visitors: Homosassa Springs Wildlife State Park, for the resident manatees and the Fish Bowl.
  • Short on time in winter: Spring Bayou in Tarpon Springs. It's the closest wild option, but sightings are hit or miss.

Can you see manatees at Clearwater Beach?

Wild ones only now and then, mostly in the warmer months. The closest bet is Clearwater Marine Aquarium's manatee rehabilitation center, 1.6 miles from Pier 60, which had two patients on view as of October 2026. It goes empty between patients, so check before you buy tickets.

What month is best to see manatees near Tampa Bay?

December through February, especially just after a cold front. In those months NOAA's average Gulf temperature at Clearwater Beach is below 68°F.

How far is Crystal River from Clearwater Beach?

About 75 road miles from Pier 60, roughly two hours each way. Leave early, because Three Sisters Springs stops selling tickets at 3:30 p.m.

Can you touch a manatee in Florida?

You shouldn't, and in many situations it's illegal. FWC's rule everywhere is look but don't touch, and in Kings Bay federal rules specifically prohibit touching a resting or feeding manatee.
