Independence Day at Clearwater Beach is one of the largest fireworks displays on Florida's Gulf Coast. The fireworks launch from the end of Pier 60 directly out over the Gulf, so the entire 3-mile beach gets a perfect viewing angle. Combined with the all-day festivities, it's one of the most-attended single events on the beach all year.
Schedule (Typical)
- All day: Beach is packed — stake your spot early
- 4 PM: Pier 60 Sunset Festival setup begins, live music starts
- 5–8 PM: Food trucks, live bands, activities
- ~8:20 PM: Sunset (bring sunglasses, this is the best Gulf sunset of summer)
- 9 PM sharp: Fireworks begin — 20+ minutes over the Gulf
- 9:30 PM: Fireworks end, mass exodus begins
Best Viewing Spots
- Beach directly south of Pier 60 — straight-on view, biggest crowds
- Pier 60 itself — closer but partial view behind the launch zone
- Palm Pavilion beach deck — elevated, with dinner, but busy
- Rooftop of the Hyatt Regency (The Wave) — premium view, requires drinks purchase
- Sand Key Park beach — 5-minute drive south, less crowded, still clear view
- On a boat off the beach — private charter or sunset cruise, best view of all
Parking Reality
By 2–3 PM, the beach parking garages are full. Strategies:
- Arrive before 12 PM and commit to being on the beach all day
- Stay at a beach hotel and skip parking entirely — the best option
- Take the Jolley Trolley from downtown Clearwater ($5 day pass)
- Uber — but surge pricing is brutal between 9:30–11 PM
- Park in mainland Clearwater and walk / ride across the causeway
What to Bring
- Beach blanket or low-back chairs
- Cooler with water and snacks (allowed on the beach)
- Bug spray — mosquitoes come out at dusk
- Light sweatshirt for after sunset
- Headlamp/phone flashlight for the walk back
- Trash bag — pack out what you pack in
Rules & Safety
- No personal fireworks — sparklers OK, anything else is illegal
- No alcohol in open containers on public beach — strictly enforced, especially on July 4
- Police presence is heavy — don't drive impaired, period
- Stay with kids — easy to get separated in the dark crowd
Hotel Booking
Book at least 3 months ahead for July 4 weekend — beachfront rooms sell out first. If you want to avoid the driving/parking chaos entirely, stay on the beach and walk everywhere.
Pro move: dinner at Palm Pavilion at 6 PM, walk the beach during the Pier 60 Sunset Festival, watch the sun drop over the Gulf, then move 200 yards south and watch the fireworks start exactly at 9. You'll see why people come back every year.Back to Events
